2014 PGA Tour: Greenbrier Classic Recap
Jonas Blixt attempted to take the Greenbrier Classic for the second year in a row, but failed to do so as Angel Cabrera virtually came out of nowhere to claim the event. Cabrera went 16 under par in the 2014 Greenbrier Classic and edged out American George McNeill by two shots, while American Webb Simpson finished in a close third, six shots behind Cabrera.
Cabrera stormed back from a two-shot hole behind Billy Hurley III on Sunday. Hurley even extended his lead to three shots at one point, but Cabrera leapfrogged him by making bogeys on four of five holes at that point, as well as three birdies in six shots. McNeill would keep it close to the end, but Cabrera still pulled it out.
After missing the cut in nine of his 14 starts this year, Cabrera has now placed in three straight events. This was a fairly magical performance for the 45-year old Argentine, but he’s now worth keeping an eye on going into future PGA events.
While Jonas Blixt clearly didn’t defend his Greenbrier Classic title to the fullest degree, he gave a more than valiant effort. Blixt opened the event shooting 64, but trailed off over the next three days to finish tied for 35th place.
McNeill, the runner-up in the 2014 Greenbrier Classic, played magnificently in the loss, as he split 11 of 14 fairways and even nailed a remarkable hole-in-one with a 4-iron from 219 yards on the par-3 eighth hole. McNeill also learned following the final round of the GC that his sister had passed away, causing him to decide to withdraw from this week’s John Deere Classic. He did earn an exemption into The Open Championship, however, which he has reportedly accepted.
The top four players inside the top-12 at the Greenbrier Classic that had already not previously earned exemptions were also granted entry into The Open Championship this past weekend.
