Is 2014 Wes Welker’s Final Season in Denver?
The Denver Broncos and wide receiver Wes Welker enjoyed a successful marriage after the former Patriot signed with the team during last off-season. Heading into 2014, they’ll hope to continue that solid success as Denver has their sights on a return trip to the Super Bowl.
That might be where their ride together comes to an end, however. According to the Denver Post, this will likely be Welker’s last season with the team.
Welker signed a two-year deal with a team option last year, and the team picked up the option to have him return for the upcoming 2014 season. However, his contract ends heading into the 2015 off-season, where he will be 34 years old and possibly regressing.
Welker has already showed signs of being an injury liability, as he struggled with concussion symptoms at the end of the 2013 season. Denver held him out of the final three regular season games as a precaution to make sure he’d be fully ready for the playoffs.
While the concussion issue seems to be behind Welker, he’s only getting older and should naturally show signs of regression in the near future. Denver has apparently already made strong efforts to prepare for his eventual exit, as they brought in former Steelers receiver Emmanuel Sanders and drafted versatile play-maker Cody Latimer out of Indiana.
Both Latimer and Sanders offer explosiveness and play-making ability Welker simply can’t, while they’re also much younger and safer options to move forward with.
It’s entirely possible Peyton Manning puts in a good word for Welker heading into the 2015 off-season, though, as Manning won’t be too keen on losing one of his most reliable targets.
Welker operated mostly out of the slot in his first season with the Broncos, scoring a career high 10 touchdowns and grabbing 73 balls in just 13 appearances. He’ll remain one of Manning’s top weapons for 2014.
