2016 American Century Golf Championship Odds and Pick
Stephen Curry owned the NBA stage for most of the last two seasons. He’s claimed the last two MVP awards, helped his Golden State Warriors win their first title in nearly 40 years two seasons ago and got back to the NBA Finals and nearly won again last year.
If it’s up to Curry, he’ll do some more winning come Friday, when all the big celebrity names come out for the 2016 American Century Golf Championship.
Curry has been here before and has experienced solid success, finishing no worse than 28th each time. In fact, he’s improved his last two times out, finishing tied for 4th and 13th in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
This year’s tournament brings Curry back with +500 odds, giving him as good a chance as anyone to take home first place.
The field isn’t light, however, as 2015 champion Mark Mulder returns to defend his title. Let’s take a look at how Vegas sees this tourney unfolding and see if we can’t come away with a prediction:
Best American Century Odds
- Mark Mulder +333
- Mardy Fish +333
- Mark Rypien +450
- Eric Gagne +500
- Stephen Curry +500
- Jack Wagner +700
- Jeremy Roenick +800
Mulder is an obvious threat to win this year’s golf tournament, as he just won in 2015. He’d never won before that, though, so we have to give props to Mark Rypien (2-time winner), Jack Wagner (won in 2011 and 2006) and Eric Gagne, who finished second behind Mulder last year.
The sleepers in this pack we need to worry about are Curry (4th in 2013) and Mardy Fish, who is actually now pursuing a professional career in golf after a pro career in tennis. Fish is eyeing the PGA Tour and recently won a celebrity golf tourney in Florida.
- Justin Timberlake +5000
- Jared Allen +10000
- Abby Wambach +10000
- Bode Miller +20000
- Rob Riggle +30000
- Charles Barkley +50000
You’re probably not going to find your winner in this group, but these are fun people to track. Justin Timberlake will dance, Allen has wild antics, Wambach is a strong woman to root for, Miller is a winter Olympics legend, Riggle is a funny man worth cheering on and Charles Barkley is likely the most improbably champion in the entire field.
Bets on these celebrity golfers would return big payouts if somehow successful, but we wouldn’t bet the farm on any of them.
Baseball pitchers have enjoyed some stellar success at the American Century Golf Championship. Mark Mulder won last year and was followed closely behind by Eric Gagne (2nd) and John Smoltz (8th).
Pitchers weren’t just good in 2015, either. The American Century Golf Championship has seen a former MLB arm take first place three times since 1997.
NFL arms seem to have it even better if you look back at history, though. Mark Rypien enters with strong odds, likely because he stole the show as the winner in 2014 and even won the inaugural American Century Golf Championship back in 1990.
Rypien isn’t the only NFL quarterback to dominate this event, however. Billy Joe Tolliver has had even more success, winning in 2013, 2010, 2005 and 1996.
Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Chris Chandler added to the trend in 2007, while former NHL star Dan Quinn has also been quite successful with five total wins.
The trend we’re unveiling here? Athletes win this thing.
Jack Wagner happens to be the only non-athlete to win the American Century Golf Championship during it’s entire run. The 56-year old Wagner enters this year’s tourney with strong odds to give first place a go, and he could still have solid momentum after winning in 2011 and coming close again last year (5th).
While picking celebrities to win is fun and would garner the best payout for the most part, it’s not the logical way to go. Just one non-athlete has ever won this tournament, and most of the winners have been football or baseball players.

That being said, we think this is Stephen Curry’s year. He sat out the 2015 tournament, but has remained a stiff competitor in every American Century Golf Championship he’s been a part of.
Look for Curry to get the win, providing the American Century Golf Championship with it’s first NBA champion. We should also brace for some stiff competition, however, with Mulder, Rypien, Mardy Fish and Jack Wagner all factoring into the mix late.
