Bills Land Rex Ryan as Head Coach
The Buffalo Bills had to be slightly taken aback over a week ago when head coach Doug Marrone opted out of his contract with the team. Perhaps now that they found an arguable upgrade as his replacement, they won’t mind so much.
Per multiple reports, the Bills made up for the loss of Marrone by landing former New York Jets maistro, Rex Ryan. Ryan was let go by Gang Green after three straight losing seasons, but was easily the top name available in the open market.
While Ryan’s last three years weren’t ideal in the Big Apple, he never lost his handle on the defensive side of the ball and did kick his Jets tenure off with two straight trips to the AFC title game. With Ryan’s defensive grit and experience, the Bills are arguably landing a massive get.
Taking Over, Already Ahead
Ryan is walking into a terrific position with an elite defense already in place in Buffalo, while he also inherits an offense that has some solid talent to work with. In addition, the Bills just went 9-7 to cap 2014 and were on the brink of returning to the playoffs. While they couldn’t make it back, they got close and could potentially bridge the gap with the hiring of Ryan.
Same Problem, New City
Of course, Ryan himself can’t get the job done. The defense is built to kill and he can probably make them even scarier, but just like in New York, he’ll enter Buffalo with major questions at quarterback. Kyle Orton retired immediately after the season ended and that could put Ryan and the Bills back to square one at the quarterback position, where they’ll have to decide to try to bring in a new passer or go back to the talented but raw E.J. Manuel.
What Ryan does at quarterback and with the offense in general, despite not being at all known as an offensive mind, could dictate just how successful he is in his second run as an NFL head coach.
