Bills Could Move on From E.J. Manuel
E.J. Manuel was once drafted to be the savior of the Buffalo Bills. Now it’s looking more likely that he’ll be searching for a new home in 2015.
WKBW Buffalo has learned of the possibility, as sources have suggested the Bills will move on from their third-year passer if he can’t show significant strides in camp this summer.
If that’s the case, he could be as good as gone.
Manuel was a reach to begin with when Buffalo trade up back into the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft to grab the Florida State product. Manuel came into the 2013 draft as an athletic, high upside prospect, but was beyond raw. Two years later, he’s still raw and has gone from franchise quarterback to potentially being unemployed.
Truth be told, there are two ways this can go down. Either Manuel steps up and in his third season figures everything out, or the Bills trade/release him.
The latter is the more likely path at this point, even though Manuel doesn’t have much competition in the likes of Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor. That being said, as mediocre as those two passers are, they’re much more stable than an erratic Manuel.
Of course, if Manuel’s days in Buffalo are to come to an end, many will wonder where his next stop will be. It’s undeniable that he hasn’t worked out yet, but it’s also fair to say he has plenty of untapped talent and potential. In the right situation, he could be a steal of a pickup.
There is probably too much value in Manuel for a flat out release, and multiple teams would consider sending off a late-round draft pick to kick the tires. We can probably file teams like the Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans and New York Jets in as teams that could show interest.
Still, Manuel could still respond to these rumors by having his best camp yet. After all, he wasn’t awful by the numbers in his first two seasons and if he can show signs of progress, his big arm and athleticism would serve as an upgrade over predictable talents like Cassel and Taylor. Manuel probably won’t be the make or break guy for the Bills in 2015, though, so you can probably refrain from betting on the Bills to win it all, no matter how this situation shakes out.
