Black Monday Starts With Firing of Rex Ryan, Others
Rex Ryan wasn’t the first to go, and he probably won’t be the last. Still, the beleaguered New York Jets head coach was definitely one of the bigger names to get axed on the infamous “Black Monday” following the NFL’s final week of regular season action.
Along with Ryan, the Jets also let go of GM John Idzik. That represents a complete housecleaning in the Big Apple and could even lead to Gang Green bringing in a big name to help take the team to the next level. In fact, with Jim Harbaugh also fired by the San Francisco 49ers, there have already been rumors the team is interested in reeling him in as Ryan’s replacement.
In addition to Ryan and Harbaugh getting handed pink slips the Atlanta Falcons also let go Mike Smith, while the Chicago Bears fired Marc Trestman and GM Phil Emery.
On the flip side, the New York Giants opted for stability and will retain 68-year old head coach Tom Coughlin for at least one more year. Unlike some of the fired coaches, Coughlin helped bring two Super Bowls to the Giants, so they appear more inclined to wait out some struggles. New York has missed the playoffs in three straight seasons, but after the G-Men won three of their last four contests, there could be hope that momentum will build into a more successful 2015 season.
While the firings can be a bit of a bummer, they also represent serious change for many of these teams. Trestman couldn’t hack it as the main man in Chicago, but he could help turn another team’s offense around as a lead coordinator, while the likes of Harbaugh, Ryan and Smith could potentially find a head coaching gig almost immediately.
The firings also open the door for hot coordinator prospects to get their foot in the door of a head coaching gig. Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase is at the of lists, while Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn could also garner serious interest.
There could still be more big changes coming, but in the early part of Black Monday, we’ve already seen some big moves that have shaken the NFL world.
