Boston Red Sox Bring on Sandoval and Ramirez
A year after the Boston Red Sox missed out on the playoffs, they’re making a concerted effort to make sure it doesn’t happen again. The Red Sox have already been extremely active in free agency, reportedly agreeing to big deals with both Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval.
While Sandoval’s agent has yet to confirm the deal, multiple reports have come through that Sandoval has agreed to sign on with the BoSox on a five-year deal worth roughly $100 million. The 28-year old slugger gives the Red Sox some much-needed power and projects as their starting third baseman on defense.
Hanley Ramirez has also reportedly joined the team on a five-year deal worth around $90 million. Ramirez’s deal is expected to officially be announced at some point on Monday, but is reportedly a done deal and will bring even more offense to a Red Sox squad that sorely needs it.
The 30-year old Ramirez leaves something to be desired on defense and may not start out his time in Boston with a true position (some are speculating left field), but his offensive potential lends a ton of upside to Boston’s offense heading into the 2015 MLB season.
Sandoval and Ramirez are potentially big gets for a struggling Red Sox club, as they’re stealing two very solid talents away from two playoff teams in the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Sandoval and Ramirez together don’t offer much defensively, but pack a serious punch on the offensive end and could help the Red Sox improve enough to think about the playoffs again in 2015.
The Red Sox already packed a punch on offense with the likes of David Ortiz, Mike Napoli and Yoenis Cespedes on the roster, but they could dramatically improve their offense’s consistency with these two big additions.
Whether it works out or not is anyone’s guess, but the fact that the Red Sox have gone out and made two big signings early on in free agency show, at the very worst, that this organization is serious about winning again.
