Browns Reach Deal With QB Josh McCown
The Cleveland Browns might not be sure who their quarterback will be down the road. It could still be Johnny Manziel or it could be someone else they draft this year or within the next few years. All they know for sure is that Manziel might deserve a little more time to develop and that they needed to have an answer under center for 2015 at the very least.
If Manziel doesn’t end up being that answer right away, perhaps Josh McCown will. Per reports, the Browns have agree to a three-year deal to bring on the veteran signal caller, who is expected to open the 2015 NFL season as the team’s starting quarterback. More than just signing to start for the Browns, however, McCown welcomes the idea of helping Manziel mature into the position, as well as assisting him in personal growth, as well.
“Johnny is a person, and every person that I come across has value to me, and they matter,” said McCown. “So I want to help him as much as I can with all parts of it. To grow as a person and as a player and to help him go on and have a fruitful career.”
McCown has to know he’s likely not more than a one-year solution, and by Cleveland bringing him on to the $15 million deal, it also looks like they’re still committed to Manziel. McCown should serve as a temporary starter in 2015 until Manziel is ready, and if Manziel never gets to that point he can just hold down the starting gig until the Browns start over under center in 2016. For now, Cleveland appears to have a better plan at the quarterback position than the public may suggest. They addressed the position with a mild upgrade via McCown, while at the same time didn’t completely throw in the towel on Manziel.
None of this is a lock to leading the Browns back to the playoffs this year, but it’s a mild step in the right direction.
