Camelot Reveals Changes to UK National Lottery
The operator of the National Lottery in the United Kingdom, Camelot, has revealed a number of changes which it claims will create more millionaire winners.
The UK National Lottery is over 20 years old, and it has undergone many changes over the last two decades. One of the most fundamental changes to date was an increase in the price, from £1 to £2 per ticket, back in 2013, and we’re now going to see another key change. As part of a major overhaul of the draws, the number of balls in the draw will be rising from 49 to 59.
This move does not seem to have gone down too well with players at this stage. The National Lottery Facebook page has been inundated with comments, including suggestions that this move is a “rip-off” and the result of “shameless greed” by the lottery operators. Seeing as the chances of winning the top prize will be rocketing to 45 million to one from the current 14 million to one, the upset players appear to have a point.
However, the changes are not all bad news. Players will now win a free ticket for a future draw for matching just two numbers, which increases the overall chances of winning a prize from one in 43 to one in just over nine. Camelot claims that this will create nearly two million extra winners a week, although it’s fair to say players won’t get too excited about the possibility of winning a free ticket.
What might appeal to players, however, is the introduction of a new Millionaire Raffle. This will guarantee at least one million pound prize is awarded each and every draw, and is Camelot’s big selling point for these latest changes. The average jackpot is also likely to be significantly larger each week as a result of the increased number of balls in the draw. All other prizes will remain the same.
It remains to be seen whether these changes will have any impact on ticket sales, but the initial reaction from players is certainly not a good sign.
