Cardinals Sign CB Patrick Peterson to $70 Million Extension
The Arizona Cardinals made sure to keep their top defensive player under wraps for years to come. With superstar cornerback Patrick Peterson nearing the end of his rookie deal, the team wisely extended him with a new five-year contract. The deal is worth a whopping $70 million when it’s all said and done, with an incredible $48 million being guaranteed.
The deal is a big one, but it keeps one of the game’s top (and rising) young corners in Arizona through his age 30 season. Still just 24, Peterson will spend the next seven seasons trying to get the Cardinals into the playoffs and hopefully a Super Bowl.
Peterson just recently was allowed to focus all of his talent and energy on the defensive side of the football, as he had previously also split time as an electrifying return man and also made some appearances on offense. That is to be no more for the star corner, as Arizona wants him to stay focused on being the best cornerback he can be, while also probably protect him from unnecessary injury by playing too much in other areas.
In terms of new cash, Peterson will rake in $14 million for his 2014 salary now, while it’s worth noting that he bested Seattle Seahawks corner Richard Sherman’s new contract with this deal. Sherman makes slightly more annually ($300,000 more this year), but Peterson got roughly $8 million more in guaranteed money. Being younger and signing a longer deal clearly helped.
Already quickly evolving into a lockdown cornerback (grading out as the 11th best cornerback per ProFootballFocus.com last year), Peterson rides into the new 2014 NFL season with 12 career interceptions and 43 passes deflected.
This is some welcomed good news for an Arizona defense that hasn’t had a ton of it since the end of last season. Safety Tyrann Mathieu continues to slowly work back from a torn ACL, while star inside linebacker Daryl Washington will miss the entire 2014 season thanks to a season long suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Pass rusher Jonathan Abraham was also recently arrested for a DUI in June.
