Cat Zingano Set to Fight at UFC 178
The UFC’s #1 women’s bantamweight contender is back.
After almost one and a half years of absence, UFC’s top rated women’s contender Cat Zingano will return to the octagon to face up an upcoming prospect Amanda Nunes on September 27th at UFC 178.
Zingano has not fought since her UFC debut on April 13th, 2013 where she defeated Meisha Tate via a third round TKO. That win earned her a coaching spot for The Ultimate Fighter 18, which would give her the opportunity to challenge the opposing coach and UFC Women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey in the finale.
Zingano suffered a knee injury which kept her out of action until the end of the year. Tragedy struck Zingano in January when her husband Mauricio committed suicide in their Denver home. The incident prolonged Cat Zingano’s absence and as Ronday Rousey kept on racking up wins, UFC fans have been eagerly awaiting the return of Cat Zingano.
Rousey, Zingano is undefeated in her MMA career, she has a record of 8-0 with 4 KOs and 3 submissions. Zingano was the first 130 lbs and 135 lbs champion of the production “Ring of Fire”. She also won the 125 lbs and 130 lbs titles at “Fight to Win.” Zingano submitted Raquel Pennington in her first match at Invicta Fighting Championships in 2012 before moving to the UFC in 2013.
Her opponent is the #8 ranked knockout artist Amanda Nunes (9-3 with 8 KOs and 1 submission). The 26 year old Brazilian is 2-0 with two KO’s in the UFC. Nunes and Cat Zingano were previously slated to fight each other way back in 2012 when they were still in Strikeforce. But the fight, together with the entire card, was canceled after the main event was scratched due to an injury suffered by Gilbet Melendez
Cat Zingano is looking for an impressive victory that will finally give her the title shot against Ronda Rousey. Despite having the #1 ranking, UFC President Dana White gave Zingano a tune-up fight prior to being awarded a title shot at Rousey. Should she win this bout, a title shot may come before the end of the year to finally settle the score on who the baddest woman on the planet is.
Rousey has been on a role in the UFC, dominating and stopping all her opponents so far. But Zingano is believed to be the toughest challenge of her title reign. If Cat can shake off the octagon rust and brush aside the personal tragedy, she might be on her way to the big fight with Rowdy Ronda Rousey.
