Chiefs Land WR Jeremy Maclin on 5-Year Deal
There has been a lot of noise during the 2015 NFL Free Agency period, and it hasn’t even been alive and well for two full days. Consider the Kansas City Chiefs to be part of the chatter now, too. Per reports, the Chiefs have finally made a splash at the wide receiver position, reuniting head coach Andy Reid with former Eagles wideout, Jeremy Maclin.
KC badly needed wide receiver help after wide receivers scored exactly zero touchdowns for the team a year ago. They also sorely lacked a deep receiving talent that could turn short plays into long gains and also take the top off of the defense. In a division where Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith is tasked with keeping up with both Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers, that’s a tall order without any real weapons.
Maclin figures to be the clear number one receiver in 2015, following the signing of his massive five-year, $55 million deal. With over $22 million guaranteed, it’s safe to say Maclin is Kansas City’s top dog at receiver and will be around in that role for quite some time.
With Maclin coming in, the end appears to be coming for Dwayne Bowe, who is expected to be released by the team on Wednesday. Bowe has shown visible signs of regression and after signing a huge contract in 2013, never really lived up to expectations.
Kansas City will likely continue to add talent to their passing game, but adding Maclin and cutting the ineffective Bowe are by themselves two huge moves that will give way to a more productive offense. The team also let tight end Anthony Fasano go already this offseason, which should allow third-year tight end Travis Kelce to blossom in Reid’s offense.
Questions still remain as to whether or not Alex Smith can take advantage of Maclin’s speed, but considering he’s never had a wideout as talented as Maclin, it’s also worth wondering if we’ve even seen the best out of Smith. Only time will tell, but KC’s biggest move of the offseason initially looks to be a great one.
