Eagles to Target Marcus Mariota in Draft?
Chip Kelly used to coach Marcus Mariota at Oregon. There’s a chance he just might do so in the pros, as well. Per NJ.com, a source close to the Philadelphia Eagles suggests the team will “try” to move up in an attempt to land Kelly’s former quarterback in the 2015 NFL Draft.
Philly currently holds the #20 overall pick in April’s draft, but they know they would have faint chances of landing Mariota (or even Jameis Winston) if they stand pat. The Eagles would almost certainly have to trade up several spots for a realistic shot at the Ducks passer, if not all the way inside the top-five.
The top-five might not even be enough, as many have Mariota pegged as a franchise passer, and with a great need for quality passers, that could mean he doesn’t slide out of the top two slots. The Eagles getting there is highly questionable, while no one knows just how much they’d be willing to give up for that bold of a move.
Everyone in the league knows by now thanks to the Robert Griffin III trade what it takes to see that type of rise in the draft, so the Eagles trading up that far seems like a bit of a reach.
Kelly and co. have apparently soured on Philly’s current batch of quarterbacks, though, as Nick Foles seemed to regress before getting hurt last year and Mark Sanchez isn’t expected back with the team. That puts the Eagles very much on the radar to land Mariota, but where they currently sit doesn’t really give them a legit shot at making it happen.
Mariota ran Kelly’s offense at Oregon and is thought to be the ideal fit for Kelly, even at the next level. Blessed with great size, a strong arm and elite athleticism for the position, Mariota could potentially bring Kelly’s high-octane offense to a whole new level. The Eagles just have to figure out a way to make it happen.
