Eric Bledsoe Signs With Suns on $70 Million Deal
Eric Bledsoe didn’t like how he was being treated by the Phoenix Suns. Now he does. After months of back and forth rumors regarding Bledsoe’s uncertainty with the team, the two sides have finally agreed to a massive new contract that will keep Bledsoe in the desert for the next five years.
Per reports, the explosive combo guard has agreed to a new five-year contract that is expected to be worth roughly $70 million. The Suns had previously refused to budge from a four-year, $48 million offer, but ultimately caved under the pressure of potentially losing Bledsoe.
Bledsoe was primed to enter the final year of his contract and would have created an interesting situation had he and the team not come to terms on a new deal. Had the season started without more than a restricted free agent contract (a one-year deal), Bledsoe would have been a legit candidate to be traded during the season.
As it stands, Bledsoe is now a key piece of Phoenix’s future and will team up with fellow guard Isaiah Thomas to form an athletic and explosive duo. Star point guard Goran Dragic is currently a part of that plan, too, but Bledsoe’s massive deal could make signing Dragic to a long-term deal much more difficult.
For what it’s worth, Dragic has already been open about his intentions, stating recently that he will willingly opt out of his current deal and immediately re-sign to a long-term contract with the Suns.
That may be easier said than done, however, as signing Dragic to a big money deal would suddenly have a ton of money tied up into three (albeit elite) guards. If that happens, the Suns may have to bite the bullet and deal with more average play in other spots on the roster.
For now, it’s all roses for Bledsoe and the rest of the gang in Phoenix. Bledsoe will return this year to his starting shooting guard spot, where he’ll start next to Dragic and be spelled by Thomas, who will come off the bench. If that looks good and works out this year, Phoenix may not bat an eye toward signing Dragic and keeping this trio together for years to come.
