Giants Cut Pass Rusher Mathias Kiwanuka
The New York Giants were once known for an elite defense with a dominant pass rush. Now they’ll be in the market for another talented body to try to get that label back.
End of an Era
Per reports, the team has released defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka, which will allow the team to create over $4 million in cap space. It also rids the G-Men of a disappointing veteran who was only able to register 2.5 sacks in over 500 defensive snaps a year ago.
Kiwanuka will be 32 in March and has shown signs of regression, while he also is still recovering from a knee injury he sustained last season. It’s a sad day for Mathias Kiwanuka and Giants fans, as the once vaunted pass rusher had spent his entire NFL career with Big Blue but will now likely go to a new city or may have to call it quits, altogether.
The latter is a very real possibility given Mathias Kiwanuka’s age and current health. While Mathias Kiwanuka never topped 10 sacks in a single season, he was a very valuable asset to a constantly dominant New York front line.
Kiwanuka specifically spent nine years with the Giants, registering 39.5 career sacks. Kiwanuka rarely stood out on his own statistically due to the Giants regularly maintaining a deep and effective rotation on the line, but he was an impact player and helped the G-Men secure two Super Bowl wins.
This could easily mark the end of the road for the aging veteran, but it’s still quite possible that Kiwanuka will find interest on the open market. He will surely have to prove that he’s 100% healthy and can be an asset with his next team, while he will almost certainly also have to take the veteran’s minimum to find a new home. If everything falls into place, teams like the Dallas Cowboys, St. Louis Rams or the Chicago Bears. Any other team running a 4-3 base defense looking for a quality pass rusher should also give Mathias Kiwanuka a look.
