Giants Lose Victor Cruz For Season
The New York Giants got embarrassed by the Philadelphia Eagles in a 27-0 shutout loss on Sunday Night Football. Injury was added to the insult.
Per reports, star wide receiver Victor Cruz suffered a torn patellar tendon on a play early in the third quarter and will likely be lost for the remainder of the 2014 NFL season.
Cruz sustained the injury on a fourth down play that would have been a sure touchdown. Had Cruz secured the touchdown pass, he could have cut a 20-0 deficit to 20-7 and given the Giants life with roughly half the game to go.
Cruz’s knee buckled as he planted and prepared to catch the pass, and the injury was already impacting him by the time the ball bounced off of his hands. Cruz then crumbled to the ground in obvious pain, immediately clutching his right knee. Sobbing relentlessly during and after the injury, it was clear right away that Cruz was both done for the night and quite likely done for the season.
The latter was confirmed mere minutes afterwards, as the sideline reporter for Sunday Night Football stated to the analysts in the booth that Cruz indeed sustained a torn patellar tendon.
The New York Giants haven’t officially made a statement on Cruz’s injury or immediate future, but he is almost certainly finished for the 2014 season, while it’s possible his career could also be in doubt.
With Cruz very likely done for the year, the Giants will turn to Rueben Randle and rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. as their top two starters in the passing game. The unfortunate news should also open the door for tight ed Larry Donnell to get back in the mix of the offense. Due to Beckham making his debut in week five, Donnell had disappeared from the offense (one catch in the last two games) following a hot start to the season – including a three-touchdown night in week four.
Signed through the 2018 season, Cruz is almost surely sticking with the Giants, provided he can make a full recovery for next season.
