Grizzlies Eyeing Jeff Green, Luol Deng in Trade?
The NBA trade rumor mill continues to run wild, as we’ve already seen some big moves and more could be on the way. Despite being one of the better teams in the league at 25-10, the Memphis Grizzlies are rumored to be one team that could be on the lookout for some help.
That help could potentially come in the form of Jeff Green or Luol Deng, per reports. The Grizzlies have arguably been fairly weak at the wing spots ever since trading away Rudy Gay two years ago, and currently lean on Courtney Lee and Tony Allen as their starters at shooting guard and small forward. Vince Carter and Quincy Pondexter aid the offense off the bench.
The problem? All of those guys are merely role players, while Allen is probably best suited as a situational player that simply gets matched up with the best opposing offensive player. His more natural position is shooting guard, which is the case with all the other aforementioned players, as well.
Naturally, that could put the Grizz in play to try to land an upgrade at small forward. The possibilities are endless, but the early word is that they’re interested in either Green or Deng. Deng is less likely to be the answer, as he just signed a new two-year, $19 million deal with the Miami Heat and he and his South Beach squad are still trying to figure themselves out.
Green, on the other hand, could be stolen from a floundering Boston Celtics team. Boston would probably love to get some picks or young talent in return for Green, who has always been able to score but oozes extreme inconsistency.
At the moment, neither the Heat or Celtics have expressed any interest in dealing Green or Deng, but depending on what Memphis ends up offering, they could end up budging.
Losing Deng or Green clearly would hurt the Celtics and Heat, while acquiring either could give Memphis a serious boost in their bid to chase down a top-three seed. Regardless of which trade goes down, the Heat and Grizzlies are still going to crack the playoffs, while the Celtics remain on the fence. It’s possible, however, that unloading the talented Green could hit them hard enough to push them down and out of the East’s playoff race.
