Jadeveon Clowney Could Miss Several Weeks With Knee Injury
The start of Jadeveon Clowney’s NFL career did not go as planned. Clowney registered a tackle against the Washington Redskins in week one, but quickly suffered a knee injury early in the contest and would not return.
Shortly after the Texans stole a 17-6 win over the Redskins, Houston learned of Clowney’s fate. Their prized #1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft had torn his lateral meniscus and could be on the shelf for up to 4-6 weeks.
Clowney was visibly upset after being injured, but was able to walk off the field and to the locker room on his own power.
While the injury and return time table sound bad, it’s much better news that a more serious ligament tear that could have ended his season before it started.
That won’t be the case, though, as Clowney will simply have to bite the bullet and rest up for several weeks. Houston just might be able to get by without him, too, as the rest of the defense performed exceptionally well in week one, as they sacked Robert Griffin III four times and even blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown.
Houston’s offense looked shaky at times, but a healthy Brian Cushing in the middle of the defense and J.J. Watt doing his thing had Houston looking once again like one of the league’s better defensive units. They’ll have to get by without their star rookie for a while, but once he gets back it’s obvious they’ll only be that much better.
Clowney displayed the same raw athleticism and explosiveness in the preseason that originally got him drafted, but understandably struggled in coverage as an outside linebacker in Houston’s aggressive 3-4 scheme.
The injury could even be a mild blessing in disguise, as Clowney can try to perfect the mental aspect of his position and his role within the defense. If he can do that, he’ll be ahead of the curve when he returns in about 4-6 weeks.
