John Fox Taking Over as Next Bears Head Coach
The Chicago Bears had stability before they fired Lovie Smith two years ago. Unfortunately, they weren’t making the playoffs enough. With Marc Trestman, they got neither. With John Fox, they hope to finally get both.
The team has reportedly agreed to terms with the former Broncos and Panthers head coach, who will try to direct the Bears back into the playoffs.
Fox is fresh off a fourth straight AFC West title with the Broncos, who he also guided to the Super Bowl just one season ago. Broncos GM John Elway cited “differences” in getting Denver over the hump, however, which led to what the team referred to as a “mutal” parting.
That parting opened the door to Fox looking at new opportunities, which had him immediately tied to the Chicago Bears head coaching gig. With quality candidates being swooped up left and right, the Bears were arguably running out of time. That, or they were merely biding it.
Fox figures to be the perfect candidate to take over the Bears and get the most out of them, as he has always provided a stable and balanced foundation, no matter where he’s stopped. He’s known for making the playoffs with Tim Tebow, while he’s also taken two different teams to the Super Bowl. Perhaps in the not too distant future, Chicago will be the third.
Figuring out when that could happen is tough, however, as the Bears have one of the shakiest defenses in the league and have a talented but turnover-prone quarterback. One huge challenge for Fox will be deciding whether or not he can win with Jay Cutler, who is signed to a massive long-term deal. If he can, the offense should work itself out and Fox should then be able to turn his focus to the defense, which has some solid talent but has some clear holes and has also lacked direction.
Fox should have the direction down after building defenses up to a high level everywhere he’s been, so the final step could be bringing in some veteran talent on that side of the ball, while also adding more youth via the draft.
Hiring Fox is just the beginning to Chicago’s turnaround, but with all the pieces seemingly in place, it could end up being the exact move that the team needed.
