Johnny Manziel’s Poor Rookie Season Ends With Injury
Heading into Johnny Manziel’s first year with the Cleveland Browns, many were skeptical of his ability to win within the pocket and stay healthy. After just two games, both question marks remain major issues.
After showing he had a long way to go as a pocket passer in his pro debut in week 15, Manziel added injury concern to the pile after exiting week 16 with a hamstring injury. The injury kept Manziel from returning to battle the Carolina Panthers in the second half and will also reportedly end his season.
While Manziel hasn’t looked good in brief duty, he at least appears to be taken back a bit by his shaky first season, admitting that he had been “humbled” in his first pro start. Manziel has also confessed that he perhaps hadn’t put enough time and effort into being fully prepared in his first year and that going forward he will take his job “a lot more seriously“.
He better. Manziel is already being written off by some despite playing just seven regular season quarters and the Browns are said to be considering “all options” under center going into the 2015 NFL season. Those options may still include starting Manziel, but depending on just how much better he gets over the course of the off-season, they could include other quarterbacks, as well.
One of those quarterbacks could be Brian Hoyer, who was the team’s starter for the first 14 weeks of the year. After flaming out, Hoyer may have played himself out of another starting job elsewhere, and may end up being reserved to settling for a meager salary to stay in Cleveland.
On top of Hoyer and Manziel, however, the Browns could take it one step further and bring in another veteran, or even draft more talent in the 2015 NFL Draft. There are already whispers that the team could consider trading up to land a top flight passer, most namely Oregon prospect, Marcus Mariota.
Regardless of what happens, Manziel hasn’t done much to quell fears of his lack of skill-set and ability to stay healthy. And if he can’t do exactly that by the time next year rolls around, he might lose his job before he ever truly got it.
