Josh Gordon Fails Drug Test, Faces Suspension for Entire 2014 Season
For a team that finished 4 – 12 last season, the Browns have some remarkable spots of talent on their roster, including 3 players who are among the best at their position in the entire NFL: cornerback Joe Haden, center Alex Mack, and, perhaps the best of all, wide receiver Josh Gordon.
In the 2014 NFL Draft, the Browns gave Haden a worthy compliment in Justin Gilbert, and added an exciting new QB in Johnny Manziel. Things were looking up heading in to Day 2 of the draft, and then fate stepped in and slapped the organization in the face.
Johnny Manziel may be without his most dangerous weapon for the entirety of the 2014 season. Gordon has failed another drug test, his second failed test of his NFL career, which should result a suspension for the entire 2014 season. Gordon’s first violation was reportedly for using a cough syrup containing a banned substance, and this current suspension is for marijuana use.
Gordon entered the league already with red flags, being suspended twice and eventually kicked off the Baylor for substance abuse. The Browns saw him as a high risk – high reward prospect and selected him in the 2012 Supplemental Draft. They were rewarded mightily in 2013, when Gordon was voted to the Pro Bowl after leading all receivers with 1,646 receiving yards. He was able to amass all those yards despite missing 2 games for his cough syrup-related substance abuse offense.
The Browns weren’t able to enjoy those rewards for long. With his second substance abuse offense in the NFL, Gordon is now in Stage Three of the NFL’s substance abuse program, which will ban him for an entire year. Any subsequent offense will ban Gordon indefinitely from the NFL, which is something we have seen recently in Jacksonville’s troubled receiving star Justin Blackmon.
It is confusing that, even with knowledge of Gordon’s suspension, the Browns neglected to address the wide receiver position in the first 3 rounds of the 2014 NFL Draft. Manziel will have to make the best out of a receiver corps that leaves a lot to be desired.
