Josh McCown to Begin 2015 as Browns Starter
The Cleveland Browns didn’t take a quarterback in the 2015 NFL Draft, leaving the door open to someone on their roster taking over under center in 2015. For the moment, that figures to be recently signed veteran quarterback, Josh McCown.
Head coach Mike Pettine suggested as much, admitting that it is “fair to say” that McCown is being regarded as the leader of Cleveland’s offense.
Which McCown to Browns Get?
Cleveland got McCown for two reasons; to be a steady veteran presence if they need him and to help guide the immature Johnny Manziel in his second pro season. Both plans appear to be set in place for the moment, but the former could be tested early in the year if Manziel can’t beat out McCown during the preseason.
Of course, McCown has the job for now and could very well enter the 2015 season under center. With that being a real possibility, Browns fans have to wonder, are they getting the McCown that failed in Tampa Bay in 2014 or the McCown that lit up the NFL in Chicago in 2013?
It’s hard to tell, especially since in both of his previous two stops McCown had more than enough weapons. Now in Cleveland, it’s pretty safe to say the supporting cast is the weakest McCown has seen in years. The Browns figure to run a balanced attack that leans more on the ground than McCown’s arm, however, and if McCown can merely be a sound game-manager, his experience could serve well.
With Johnny Manziel less than a full month removed from a stin in rehab, it’s only natural that McCown would remain the unquestioned starter heading into training camp. Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s set in stone.
McCown provides value as a mentor even if he loses the starting gig to Johnny Football, and the latter has to be part of the long-term plan. Manziel will need to prove himself when it comes to work ethic, practice and preparation, but there still appears to be a path to him taking over under center in his second season. It just runs through McCown first.
