Kendrick Perkins to Sign With Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers have turned things around over the past month and finally are starting to look like a legit title contender. Free agents looking to join a deep playoff run have taken notice.
Former Oklahoma City Thunder big man Kendrick Perkins is one of those free agents, and will reportedly sign a new deal and latch on with the Cavaliers. Perkins has not officially signed, but is said to have “committed” to signing on with Cleveland. Perkins had spent the past five years with the Thunder, but was traded to the Utah Jazz on Thursday. After reaching a buyout agreement with the Jazz, Perkins was free to choose any team to sign on with for the rest of the season.
Perkins has picked Cleveland, who looks more and more the part of a champion with each passing day. Perkins doesn’t figure to have a prominent role, but he will at the very least provide excellent depth at the center position behind starter, Timofey Mozgov. Mozgov was originally acquired in a trade with the Denver Nuggets to help make up for the loss of injured big man Anderson Varejao – a move that has worked out swimmingly for the Cavaliers.
Cleveland will hope signing Perkins on for the rest of the year works just as well, though not needing big minutes from the former Thunder banger could be the recipe for success. Never an offensive threat, Perkins is at his best when he’s fresh and not asked to do to much. In Cleveland, he’ll merely be a big body that is asked to rebound and defend the paint when he’s on the floor.
Piece by piece, the Cavaliers continue to piece together a team that just might make a run to the NBA Finals in it’s first season together. Chances are they aren’t even done adding pieces, either, as sharpshooter Ray Allen has been in rumors all year and has yet to decide on his playing future.
Whether or not Perkins is the final piece to Cleveland’s championship run remains to be determined, but for now it’s at the worst a great depth add and won’t hurt their bid to improve going forward.
