Kevin Durant Ruled Out For Season
The Oklahoma City Thunder waited patiently all year for superstar forward Kevin Durant to get back to 100%. Unfortunately, it’s just not going to happen. A lingering foot issue stemming from before the season has ended Durant’s 2014-15 NBA campaign, as the team announces Friday afternoon that Durant would undergo foot surgery.
Durant’s surgery will knock him out of the rest of the regular season and if OKC makes the playoffs, he won’t be available. Out for the next 4-6 months, Durant won’t be a lock to be 100% when the 2015-16 season starts and it’s debatable whether or not he’ll be fully himself even when he does return.
Even more questionable is Durant’s future in general, as players who have any kind of foot ailment are in danger of dealing with a chronic condition. Thunder fans will have to hope that isn’t the case for the 26-year old Durant, who will undergo the third surgery on his troublesome right foot.
Durant’s latest foot woes put several things in question. One is his future in the league if this surgery doesn’t work out, while the other could be what the Thunder plan on doing with him beyond next season. Durant will be entering a contract year and there has been much speculation that he’d try to leave in free agency in 2016 and possibly sign with his hometown team, the Washington Wizards. It’s possible OKC could panic over either Durant’s health or his future plans and trade him prior to next year’s trade deadline.
The Thunder’s decision on Durant’s future could end up being heavily impacted by star point guard Russell Westbrook, who has been playing at an MVP-level since the All-Star break. For the Thunder to make the playoffs, Westbrook will have to continue to do just that, as OKC tries to either overtake the Portland Trail Blazers in the West’s Northwest division or secure the eighth and final spot over the Phoenix Suns and New Orleans Pelicans.
