Magic Fire Head Coach Jacque Vaughn
The Orlando Magic front office couldn’t take the losing anymore. Thanks to an ugly 10-game losing streak, the Magic’s deciciencies were more evident than ever and their ineptitude begged for a change. Per reports, that’s led to Orlando’s brass pulling the plug on third-year coach, Jacque Vaughn.
The team fired Vaughn on Thursday after a rough 58-158 stay in Orlando. Originaly hired as an up and comer among the coaching ranks, Vaughn failed to live up to high expectations and couldn’t build a winner in a bad Eastern Conference despite having what looks to be enough talent.
Orlando struggled mightily on the defensive side during their losing skid and on the year gives up over 102 points per game. With an inconsistent offense backing that shaky defense, the Magic have begun to routinely get blown out.
The Magic are currently buried at the bottom of the Southeast division at 15-37 and probably don’t have any real hopes of sneaking into the NBA playoffs. They’d need to raise their level of play across the board, while a spirited effort from interim coach James Borrego could potentially help the Magic make some noise at the bottom of the standings. A likely scenario, however, that is not.
Instead, Borrego will just likely try to hold his own and keep the team from sinking even further while the Orlando executives decide who the long-term head coach replacement will be. Former Magic player Scott Skiles has popped up as a candidate, while veteran coaches such as George Karl and Stan Van Gundy could also garner consideration, although it’s unlikely either would like to take on a rebuilding project.
This current Orlando squad wasn’t even supposed to be a full rebuilding project heading into this season. With a young and potent trio of Victor Oladipo, Tobias Harris and Nikola Vucevic, Orlando had hopes of sneaking into the bottom of the playoff race. That hasn’t come to fruition, unfortunately, and now Orlando may have to re-think their process from top to bottom.
