Minnesota TE Maxx Williams Declares For Draft
The tight end position just got a little deeper for the 2015 NFL Draft. Following a strong effort in Minnesota’s bowl game loss on Thursday, star tight end Maxx Williams has reportedly officially declared for this year’s upcoming draft.
The 20-year old will enter the draft as a slightly raw prospect, but one that did a lot in his two seasons with the Golden Gophers. During that time, the 6’4″ Williams averaged over 16 yards per catch, specifically shining in 2014 with 36 receptions for 550 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Williams’ ability to be an asset in the red-zone was made clear in 2014, while his ability to create after the catch despite his size should come off as special to NFL scouts.
While NFL scouts probably already knew about Williams and his nice size/pass-catching combination, they got an even closer look at his difference-making ability on Thursday afternoon. After catching a pass, Williams hurdled two defenders and shed a tackle en route to an impressive touchdown.
That was just the icing on the cake for Williams, who capped a stellar second season in Minnesota and a solid overall two-year stay in college.
The future looks bright for Williams, who some liken to a modern day Jeremy Shockey, although more recently he’d be hyped up as a poor man’s Rob Gronkowski. The initial comparison probably has more to do with Williams’ tattoos, but the reality is he’s a big, physical pass-catching tight end that also possesses solid speed for the next level.
Naturally, Williams declaring for the draft puts him in contention for the top tight end on the big board, and could potentially even make him a first round selection. Regardless of where he’s taken, numerous teams will be in the market for a young, talented tight end early in May’s draft. Among them, the New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons and Green Bay Packers could all show some interest.
