Online Skill Games Closer to Being Legal in India
India has taken one more positive step towards legalizing online skills games. Per reports, Nagaland, a small state in India, has made the necessary moves to become the first state in the country to approve online skill games legislation. The news could potentially give the okay to the licensing of paid online poker and other online skill games such as daily fantasy sports.
The announcement comes after Chief Minister TR Zeiland brought forth the Nagaland Prohibition of Gambling and Promotion of Online Games of Skill Bill, which states that gambling is “wagering or betting on games of chance” and excuses any games “where there is preponderance of skill over chance”.
Hence, the approval of online skill games. Upon close studying of the bill by a Nagaland committee, the bill was passed due to appearing legal and also offering major potential revenue generation for the state.
Not Done Yet
The process isn’t quite over despite the recent success, however. GLaws.in recently reported that the bill now moves on to the state governor, who could sign it off as a law. From there, the Indian government would then draft new regulations and licensing details, a course of action that could take several months.
One main reason why the bill looks to be slated to pass is it’s broad definition of “games of skill”, which breaks down the proposed skill involved:
“Relates to strategizing the manner of placing wagers or placing bets or where the skill lies in team selection or selection of virtual stock based on analyses or where the skill relates to the manner in which the moves are made, whether deployment of physical or mental skill and acumen.”
Unlike many other takes for online games of skills, Zeilang wasted no time with mere definitions or haggling. Instead, the bill put an extra emphasis on helping the state government earning revenue via licensing fees and royalties.
In other words, Nagaland has accomplished what the top daily fantasy sports sites haven’t done yet completely in the United States. That doesn’t necessarily mean that online games of skill will be legalized throughout the country, but this could be the tipping point for online skill games in India.
