Packers Extend WR Jordy Nelson With 4-Year Deal
Many were wondering if the Green Bay Packers were preparing to distance themselves from their contract year wide receivers this offseason. After they drafted three wide receivers in the 2014 NFL Draft, it was a move that seemed logical.
That won’t be the case. The team clearly values number one wide receiver Jordy Nelson, as they finalized a four-year pact with the receiver on Saturday. The deal is reportedly worth $39 million and includes over $14 million in guaranteed money and a $11.5 million signing bonus.
It’s a solid deal for the Packers, who were getting a very productive Nelson at a discount price for years. Nelson isn’t the league’s highest paid player by any means, but will average a hair under $10 million per season over the next four years. Green Bay retains Nelson in his prime, too, as the freshly turned 29-year old receiver appears to be at the top of his game with several high quality years in his future.
While Nelson has definitely proven his value over the years, it’s arguable his impressive 2013 season takes the cake, as he somehow managed to catch 85 balls and post a career high 1,314 receiving yards despite being forced to tough out seven games without star quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
A big receiver blessed with soft hands and great ball skills, Nelson has developed into one of the game’s most complete wideouts. Oddly viewed as a receiver with deceptive speed, Nelson is also just flat-out fast in the open field and can still take the top off of defenses. The beauty of Nelson, though, is that he fits perfectly in Green Bay’s spread out, potent passing game. He doesn’t need the ball 80+ times a year like he did in 2013 to be effective. A perfect example is his 2011 season, in which he caught just 68 passes but was able to score a league high 15 touchdowns.
Nelson probably isn’t going to turn around and score 15 touchdowns in a season again, but his combined 15 scores over the past two years prove he’s a legit red-zone weapon. He’s set up to have another monster season for the green and gold in 2014.
