Packers RB Johnathan Franklin’s Career in Danger?
The Green Bay Packers may have to start thinking about adding more depth to the running back position. Per ESPN.com, second-year running back Johnathan Franklin has yet to participate in any football activities this summer and the team thinks it’s possible his career could be in jeopardy.
Franklins suffered a concussion and neck injury in week 12 of his rookie season and has reportedly never recovered. Green Bay plans on putting him through more tests to find out if he can even think about playing again, and with the team’s history in dealing with players with neck issues, it could mean the end of the line for the young back if the tests aren’t passed with flying colors.
The Packers already turned away star safety Nick Collins after he sustained a neck injury several years ago, while star tight end Jermichael Finley was the second big name added to the list thanks to a neck injury in 2013. Finley is still working his way back and hopes to play again, but to this point hasn’t been fully given the green light by Green Bay doctors.
Franklin was a nice surprise as a rookie in 2013, as the former fourth round pick stepped up in week three when James Starks (who was already filling in for an injured Eddie Lacy) went down with an injury against the Cincinnati Bengals. Franklin went on to rush for 103 yards and a score on just 13 carries, although he did cost the Packers the game due to a late game fumble.
Overall, the Packers were excited about Franklin and their suddenly deep backfield, but are now concerned their 24-year old running back may be a liability. With a deep running back roster and DuJuan Harris waiting to take over Franklin’s spot, the Packers will surely allow Franklin to take his time in trying to work his way back to 100%. They will just hope it’s something that can actually be done.
