Panthers Name Derek Anderson Week 15 Starting QB
Cam Newton’s car accident on Tuesday didn’t leave him with any serious or life-threatening injuries. It did, however, bang him up enough to keep him from playing for the Carolina Panthers in week 15.
Per reports, Newton will miss Carolina’s game against the division rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers due to two minor fractures in his back. Backup quarterback Derek Anderson will start in his place.
It’s a dramatic drop down, going from Newton to Anderson, as Newton is more accurate and a vastly superior athlete, but Anderson is quite experienced and does possess above average arm strength. In fact, Anderson even has recent experience against this week’s opponent, as he tossed two touchdowns against the Buccaneers earlier this year in a winning effort.
It remains to be determined if the Panthers will exercise extra caution due to Carolina not being a lock for the playoffs, but multiple reports have suggested that the team could play it safe and shut Newton down for the remainder of the season.
How Carolina fares without Newton this week will likely go a long way in deciding his status for the rest of the year. All we know for sure is that Newton will sit out this week and he and the Panthers will then assess his health going into week 16. If Newton isn’t ready to take the field by then, however, it could easily mark the end of a disappointing 2014 season.
Without Newton, the Panthers obviously are a little less likely to beat the Buccaneers this week. Tampa Bay doesn’t have much to play for, but they could get up for this game, both to play spoiler and to also beat a bitter division rival.
Looking past this week, should Carolina somehow win out and still be without Newton if they make the playoffs, they’d obviously be a real threat to be one and done. That’d almost certainly be the case, either way, but no Newton clearly makes the Panthers much less of a threat.
