Patriots Bring Back RB LeGarrette Blount
The New England Patriots were fine with letting running back LeGarrette Blount walk in free agency this past off-season. Now they’re bringing him back.
The team signed the veteran running back to a two-year deal on Thursday after Blount was recently released by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Blount had fallen out of favor with the Steelers due to a poor attitude and instead of being disciplined, Pittsburgh opted to simply part ways with the disgruntled running back.
That works for the Patriots, who got bit by the injury bug in the offensive backfield when Stevan Ridley store his ACL a few weeks ago. Ridley’s presence initially had the Pats feeling good about letting Blount walk despite experiencing a career revival with New England in 2013.
Blount helped the Patriots reach the AFC title game in 2013, as he put up over 700 rushing yards during the regular season, while sporting a gaudy 5.0 yards per carry. Blount continued his dominance in the post-season before the Patriots inexplicably abandoned the running game in a loss to the Broncos in the AFC Championship game.
New England has gotten back to the basics recently, though, and shouldn’t look to stray from their successful rushing attack anytime soon. With undrafted rookie Jonas Gray putting up four touchdowns and 201 rushing yards in week 11, it seems the Patriots already have the talent in place to lead an effective, balanced offense.
While Gray combines with Shane Vereen to give New England a highly versatile backfield, it appears Bill Belichick and co. couldn’t pass up the chance to cheaply sign a guy they have had success with.
Blount doesn’t figure to play a prominent role right away, but given his success with the team and Gray’s inexperience, it’s possible he could start eating into both Gray and Vereen’s touches in a matter of weeks.
