Patriots Cut Linebacker Brandon Spikes
The New England Patriots took yet another hit on the defensive side of the ball, as they cut ties with linebacker Brandon Spikes on Monday morning.
Spikes was reportedly involved in a hit-and-run to some degree over the weekend, in which three people were injured. A car in Spikes’ name is said to have struck a deer, while victims in the car behind Spikes’ car sustained injuries. Spikes’ vehicle was abandoned at the scene and it is not known if Spikes was the driver. Spikes’ exact involvement in the incident is also unknown, but the Pats clearly weren’t willing to wait to find out.
Placed on a zero-tolerance policy with the team after a bit of a falling out with head coach Bill Belichick, the team wasted little time shedding Spikes from their roster. The team did the same thing with tight end Aaron Hernandez just over a year ago, once they learned of serious accusations that linked him to a homicide.
New England may be pulling the right trigger as it pertains to PR and public image, but they aren’t doing their defensive roster any favors. Spikes was still just 27 years old and had returned to Foxboro after a one-year hiatus with the Buffalo Bills. Spikes had spent the previous four years of his NFL career with the Patriots.
Spikes could have a hard time finding his next NFL job as long as the investigation involving him continues, but the moment he’s in the clear (if he ever is), numerous teams could come calling. The Bills are one team that could show interest, as he played well for Buffalo a year ago and the team traded away Kiko Alonso. Other teams in need of linebacker help could look past this possibly minor hiccup and give the talented Spikes a chance.
As for the Patriots, they will turn back to Dont’a Hightower and Jerod Mayo, who have both struggled to stay healthy. Without Spikes around to secure their depth, they may have to rely on Dane Fletcher and Chris White more than they’d like in 2015.
