Pelicans Name Alvin Gentry New Head Coach
The New Orleans Pelicans long considered massive names like Tom Thibodeau and Jeff Van Gundy for their head coaching vacancy, but ultimately rested with Golden State Warriors assistant, Alvin Gentry.
There’s no telling how serious the interest was between the other parties, but rumors suggested Thibodeau was seeking a break after his up and down tenure with the Chicago Bulls and Van Gundy didn’t want to be tied down to a franchise that he felt would ultimately lose Anthony Davis in free agency.
Gentry is far from a last resort, though, as the offensive-minded coach has been instrumental in helping the Warriors turn into legit NBA Finals contenders in just one year. Before Golden State, Gentry was also Doc Rivers’ right hand man with the Los Angeles Clippers, where he yet again proved to be an excellent assistant.
While Gentry has less success at the head coaching level than some of the other top candidates, he did enjoy several solid seasons with the Phoenix Suns from 2008-2012. During that time Gentry helped a Steve Nash-led crew to the Western Conference Finals and sported one of the more exciting offenses in the entire league.
In New Orleans, Gentry will be tasked with developing big man Anthony Davis and finding out how to get the most out of an underrated roster. Gentry has Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans to work with at point guard, Eric Gordon at the two, Ryan Anderson off the bench and Omer Asik at center.
What Gentry does to improve the roster could be even more important than how he helps it grow, as Asik and Gordon have at times seemed like poor fits. Then again, with a new system in place, it’s possible Gentry could have a clear vision of how to use everyone that is currently on the roster.
Landing Gentry doesn’t make the Pelicans a title contender right away, but there’s little doubt Gentry is an upgrade over the indecisive Mont Williams, who the team fired just a few weeks ago.
