Phoenix Suns 2014 Off-Season
The Phoenix Suns were one of the NBA’s most surprising and exciting teams this past season. A team that many thought would tank their way to the top of the lottery instead found themselves playing for a playoff spot. They ultimately came up just a few games short, but their play has made them a team to look out for this summer.
The Suns are flush with high end assets. They can re-sign Eric Bledsoe to a long term deal this summer, and they already have his dynamic backcourt mate Goran Dragic locked up until 2016. The Morris brothers and Miles Plumlee are all still on their rookie deals, and Gerald Green will be around at least another year.
The Suns’ can make a huge splash in the draft, where they own the 14th, 17th, and 27th picks. It’s unlikely that they use all of those picks, as they already have a relatively young team and want more experienced players to build upon their exciting season. Still, the Suns could target athletic, jump shooting wings such as Cleanthony Early from Wichita State or Glenn Robinson III from Michigan.
If the Suns don’t want to use those picks on their own players, then they could try to make a trade for a more established veteran who could bring shooting, such as Aaron Afflalo of the Orlando Magic. The Suns are likely to also see internal improvement from young players such as Archie Goodwin and Alex Len, which could lessen their need for draft picks.
Head coach Jeff Hornacek has done a tremendous job with his team—everyone thought they had assets, but nobody thought they would win 48 (nearly 50!) games! This off-season they could build upon what was a great year, through their assets and flexibility.
Suns management has stressed that they aren’t satisfied with the results of their season. They want to improve and be Western Conference contenders within the next few years. They can do just that with the right signing or trades—so look out for the Suns to try and make a splash this summer.
