Redskins Lose Robert Griffin III to Dislocated Ankle
The woes of Robert Griffin III’s young NFL career continued on Sunday, as the Washington Redskins quarterback suffered a non-contact ankle injury and was forced from the game. RG3 reportedly dislocated his left ankle as he rolled out on a play against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and crumbled to the ground in pain.
RG3 was not able to return to the game, while speculation arose as to just how long his latest injury would keep him out. While a return time table is not immediately known, speculation has ranged from Griffin missing 4-5 weeks, several months or possibly even the entire 2014 season.
No matter how long he’s out, backup quarterback Kirk Cousins will step in and man the offense until (if) he returns.
Cousins performed admirably in that roll on Sunday, as he stepped up in the absence of RG3 by completing his first 12 passes and ending the day with two touchdowns and zero interceptions in a 41-10 romp over the Jaguars.
Cousins said after that game that this was still “Robert’s team” and that as the backup quarterback, he simply needed to be ready to step up when called upon. Whether Cousins truly believes Washington is Griffin’s team or not, he may have to prepare for a long stay under center as the Redskins’ main starting quarterback.
There were already whispers of a quarterback controversy before the season, as respected analyst and former Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann went on record by saying Cousins was the preferred quarterback. In fact, there are now even rumors coming out that rookie head coach Jay Gruden initially preferred Cousins for his system, as well.
Only time will tell just how significant of an injury this is for RG3, and the same goes for whether or not Cousins is the right man for the job. All we know for sure is that RG3 yet again raises doubts about his durability, and that if Cousins performs well while RG3 is out, the Washington front office will have a tough decision to make going forward.
