Rory McIlroy Wins the 2014 World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational
The legend of Rory McIlroy continues. The 25-year old Ulsterman took home first place at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational this weekend, as he delivered a final-round 4-under-par 32-34=66 to post 15-under 265 and top 54-hole leader Sergio Garcia by two strokes.
McIlroy put on quite a show at Firestone, knocking in huge drives and playing with ridiculous precision all over the green. With his latest impressive victory, McIlroy moves back into the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking. Accompanied by Tiger Woods’ back injury, there’s now little reason to buy into McIlroy as more than just golf’s next big thing – he might just truly be the best golfer in the world.
With another big win, McIlroy heads into the 2014 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club as the clear favorite.
As impressive as McIlroy was this weekend and has been overall for some time, he wasn’t the only one to hit the ball well.
Garcia played extremely well throughout the weekend, but could not hold onto a three stroke lead entering Sunday’s final day of action, and ultimately took second place behind McIlroy with 13-under par. Marc Leishman joined the top two finishers as the only golfers to make it above 10-under par on the weekend, as he locked down a third place finish by shooting 12-under par, just one stroke out of second place and three strokes out of the lead.
Justin Rose, Charl Schwartzel, Keegan Bradley and Patrick Reed all tied for fourth place with 9-under par, while Adam Scott, Graeme McDowell, Rickie Fowler and Ryan Moore all shot 7-under to round out the top-10 finishers in a tie for eighth place.
Other notable names that fared well but finished outside of the top-10 were Matt Kuchar (tied for 12th) and Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk (tied for 15th place). Bubba Watson and Bill Haas were the two most interesting finishers outside of the top-30, while Tiger Woods and Jason Day both withdrew from the competition.
