Tigers Land Yoenis Cespedes in Trade For Rick Porcello
The Detroit Tigers added even more power to their already elite offense on Thursday, as they completed a trade to land outfielder Yoenis Cespedes from the Boston Red Sox. The team sacrificed ace Rick Porcello in the process, but also got back pitchers Alex Wilson and Gabe Speier.
Cespedes ends up being a one-year rental with his contract ending after the 2015 MLB season, but he could be worth the risk on a team absolutely stacked with hitters. The number two scoring team in the league last year, Detroit adds Cespedes’ big bat to a line of big hitters, including Victor Martinez, Miguel Cabrera, Ian Kinsler and J.D. Martinez.
With Cespedes in place, the Tigers should have little problem finishing among the top three in runs scores yet again in 2015.
While Detroit helped it’s offense even more, losing Porcello certainly could come back to bite them on the defensive end. That ends up being a huge move for Boston, who was going to lose Cespedes to free agency anyways and needed to make up for letting Jon Lester walk.
The Bo Sox had already acquired Wade Miley and landing Porcello could vastly improve and already solid defense. Boston clearly loses some upside on it’s offense by letting Cespedes walk, but after landing Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez in free agency, it’s clear the Red Sox already felt good about their offensive changes.
Ultimately, this deal could be a wash, and in the best sense possible. The Tigers still have great pitching even without Porcello, while they did get increased depth in the trade. Boston, meanwhile, had already protected itself on offense and lands the ace they sorely needed.
The big question is just how big of an impact will these off-season moves have for both teams? It may not matter much for the Tigers, who took first place in the AL Central last year and were going to be in contention to do so again, regardless. It’s the Red Sox who could see a spike in overall production now, as they should look to have a vastly improved offense, as well as a stout bullpen.
