Timberwolves to Interview Dave Joerger For Head Coaching Vacancy
The Minnesota Timberwolves will be moving in a new direction for the 2014-15 NBA season, as veteran head coach Rick Adelman has stepped down from his post. That means the process in finding a new, long-term coach begins now, and the T’Wolves apparently already have their sights set on their prize.
Per reports, Minnesota has been given permission to interview current Memphis Grizzlies head coach Dave Joerger to fill their coaching vacancy. Joeger did a fine job in his first and only season in Memphis, helping the Grizz earn the seventh seed in the Western Conference Finals and taking the Oklahoma City Thunder to a full seven game series.
Joerger’s success during the 2013-14 NBA season was no small feat, as he endured injuries to point guard Mike Conley and center Marc Gasol. In fact, Memphis was even forced to play their decisive seventh game in the opening round of the playoffs without Zach Randolph due to a one-game suspension. Despite that, Joerger coached the Grizz to a strong first half showing before the Thunder pulled away for the win.
So, why would Memphis want to get rid of such a solid presence on the sidelines? For the same reason they canned Larry Drew despite several solid seasons at the same post – their owner is nuts.
In fact, Memphis has already cut ties with numerous high ranking executives recently, and Joeger and Memphis ownership both want to part ways. There’s just one problem: Joerger’s current contract. Naturally, Joerger doesn’t want to leave a multi-year deal on the table, while the team doesn’t want to pay it in full, either.
Joerger has proven to be a very solid, young head coach and has obvious upside going forward, but for some reason Memphis already wants to start over. Doing so would give the Grizzlies a third coach in three years.
Minnesota, on the other hand, just wants a competent head coach that offers some long-term upside. They may not be able to lock down Kevin Love, but if they can land a quality young head coach like Joerger, they should eventually be able to attract solid free agents and continue their solid progress toward getting back to the playoffs.
