Breaking Down Tom Thibodeau’s Top Potential Suitors
The Chicago Bulls are out of the 2015 NBA playoffs, and just like that, head coach Tom Thibodeau could be out of Chicago, as well.
There had been whispers all season long that Thibodeau and management were butting heads, and now reports are surfacing yet again that Thibs’ days are numbered.
With the Bulls’ season over and Thibodeau possibly on the move, it’s a good time to ponder where he could be headed. Let’s break down his top potential suitors if/when he gets canned:
New Orleans Pelicans
New Orleans just fired Monty Williams despite the fact that they just made the playoffs last year. That was a clear sign they think they’re being held back by coaching and once Thibs hits the open market, they’ll be ready to pounce. There have already been reports tying them to Thibodeau, so it could be a perfect match.
New Orleans already has a balanced team with good talent and a solid defense, while Thibodeau would probably jump at the chance of working with Anthony Davis. He could very well turn a solid Pelicans team into a legit title contender in just a couple of seasons.
Denver looks like a horrible fit on paper, as they have a very bad defense and probably don’t have the players in place for Thibs to effectively run his system. That being said, he does have a solid core of players here and Denver has been rumored to be a big player in the trade game going forward.
At the worst, Thibs could start from scratch and build a new roster in his image. It’d be a dramatic drop down, though, and he wouldn’t have one true building block to lean on.
The Magic are another possibility, as they’re the third team with a clear head coaching vacancy. They’re better off than the Nuggets at first glance, as they have a young, rising talent at just about every position. Orlando needs to round out some rough spots offensively, but Thibs would dramatically help their porous offense. He’d also get to stay in the East and take down his former team.
The safe money is on the Pelicans, as they have the game’s top rising star and are already a playoff team.
