Tony Stewart Hits, Kills Competing Driver
It’s a bad day for racing fans. Nascar star driver Tony Stewart was involved in an incident on Saturday night, when his car struck another driver and killed him. The incident occurred at a dirt track in upstate New York, when a driver exited his vehicle to confront Stewart for spinning his car into the side of the track.
The driver that was on foot was struck by the side of Stewart’s car, reportedly sucked into the car and then tossed approximately 50 feet across the race track. The victim, 20-year old Kevin Ward, was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital.
The video of the incident has gone viral, as many are speculating whether or not Stewart’s hit on Ward was intentional and requires legal action. There has been no official word from Stewart’s camp, but word has broken that Stewart will in fact sit out of his scheduled Sunday race. It had previously been reported that Stewart had not been removed from the lineup and would race, but either out of respect of Ward or to protect himself from public outcry, Stewart has backed out of the race.
To this point, it has been reported that there are no chargers pending toward Stewart, who has remained cooperative since the accident.
Judging solely off the video, it seems to be completely open for debate whether Stewart actually tried to swipe his car into Ward, or instead initially tried to avoid hitting him.
The video shows an angry Ward walking in the middle of the dirt track, stutter stepping in and out of the way of another car, and then eventually being struck by Stewart’s car. Some eye witnesses suggested than Stewart “revved his engine” and appeared to purposefully swipe the back of his car into Ward, while others have suggested that Stewart was trying to avoid hitting a fellow driver.
Details are sure to emerge within the next 24-48 hours.
