UEFA Champions League Quarter Finals: Betting Preview Part 2
The first legs of the UEFA Champions League quarter finals are taking place this week and yesterday we took a look at the first two ties – Manchester United v Bayern Munich and Barcelona v Atletico Madrid. Today we have discussed the other two ties – Paris Saint Germain v Chelsea and Real Madrid v Borussia Dortmund.
PSG against Chelsea is the most closely matched of all four ties, and it is difficult to pick a team to qualify here. Most bookmakers have both the teams at around 1.91 to progress through to the semi-finals, and this reflects just how little there is between them. Chelsea might have the slight edge with home advantage in the second leg, but they have been somewhat unpredictable this season and this goes against them.
At the weekend Chelsea lost their Premier League tie against Crystal Palace; a game they were expected to win with ease. This was not the first time they have been on the wrong end of a surprise result this season and there have been a few games where they have struggled for goals. It is Jose Mourinho’s first season back in charge of the club and he hasn’t quite found the right balance between attack and defense.
On the other hand, PSG have been dominant in their domestic league – although it is worth pointing out that the standard in the French league is below that of the English league. Still, they haven’t lost a game since January and their team seems very well balanced.
In all likelihood Chelsea will set out to keep things tight and not concede in the first leg. This is something they are good at so our recommended bet for this tie is on under 2.5 goals, available at around 1.67.
Real v Dortmund is somewhat easier to call, and it is reasonable to expect that Real should overcome last year’s beaten finalists without too much difficulty. Dortmund appear weaker this year and will be without their star striker for the first leg. Real Madrid, meanwhile, have been in pretty good form recently. The odds for them to qualify are around 1.25 so there is not a huge amount of value, but it is probably the bet to make.
