UFC 209 Lineup Announced
A welterweight rematch will headline UFC 209 in Las Vegas. Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson will attempt to get his revenge against welterweight champion Tyron Woodley at T-Mobile Arena in Vegas on March 4th.
The two got into it on Twitter over the weekend, and Woodley posted a short podcast on Monday afternoon in which he confirmed the two will be meeting in the Octagon once again:
“He got under my skin so much that I’m just going to go ahead and fight this dude. Like straight up. He got under my skin that bad where I don’t even care about the ration and the money and what fight makes the most sense. You need to be careful what you ask for. “Wonderboy” you want it — come get it. You want a fight, you want to get done worse than you did the first time?
Woodley and Thompson first met at UFC 205 in New York City in November of last year in a bout that ended in a draw after five rounds. The fight earned “Fight of the Night” honors on the card at Madison Square Garden. UFC president Dana White said afterward that he wanted a rematch, and now, we are getting one.
Prior to the draw against Thompson, Woodley had won each of his last three fights, including a knockout defeat of Robbie Lawler in UFC 201 that won him the welterweight belt in the first place. He is 16-3-1 in his UFC career.
Thompson is 13-1-1 overall and had won seven straight fights heading into UFC 205. He is still seeking the welterweight championship for the first time.
Woodley vs. Thompson will be the headliner, but that obviously will not be the only fight on the card.
Alistar Overeem will take on Mark Hunt, Darren Elkins will face Mirsad Bektic and Todd Duffee will fight Mark Godbeer.
Overeem will be looking to rebound from loss in his last fight against Stipe Miocic at UFC 203. Hunt last appeared in a fight against Brock Lesnar in a result that was eventually overturned after Lesnar tested positive for performance enhancing drugs.
These two fought against each other back in 2008 in a fight won by Overeem.
Elkins has won each of his last three fights and owns an overall UFC record of 21-5. Bektic is a perfect 11-0 and defeated Russell Doane at UFC 204 in October.
Todd Duffee has not been seen in the Octagon since losing at the hands of Frank Mir back in the summer of 2015. He will make is long awaited return against Godbeer, who lost at the hands of Justin Ledet at UFC Fight Night 99 last November.
Iuri Alcantara will take on Luke Sanders in a bantamweight clash. Alcantara is one of the elder statesmen on the circuit and boasts an overall record of 34-7. Sanders made his UFC debut back in July by earning a second round win over Maximo Blanco.
A lightweight fight between Lando Vannata and David Teymur is also on the undercard. Vannata last fought at UFC 206 in Toronto last December, where he earned a knockout win over John Makdessi. Teymur will come into this fight having won each of his last two matchups against Martin Svensson and Jason Novelli.
A pair of undefeated fighters will square off when light heavyweights Paul Craig and Tyson Pedro go head-to-head. Craig made his UFC debut in December and defeated Luis Henrique da Silva. Pedro debuted in November and won in a first round submission against Khalil Rountree.
