Urijah Faber to Return at UFC 181
The UFC’s loaded UFC 181 event got officially became fully loaded with the addition of the California Kid.
Headlining the Prelims
After a prolonged rib injury which forced him off his “dream” bout with Japanese Masanori Kanahera at UFC Fight Night 52 last September 20, three time UFC title challenger Urijah Faber returns to action at UFC 181 on December 6 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Faber will be taking on #12 ranked bantamweight Francisco Rivera Jr. in the bout that will headline the event’s Prelims on Fox Sports 1.
On a Comeback Trail
The 35-year old Faber is on a comeback trail after a disappointing first round knockout loss to former UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao at UFC 169 last February. Faber successfully rebounded with an impressive third round rear-naked choke submission of Alex Caceres at UFC 175.
Faber is 6-3 in the UFC with his three losses all coming in championship bouts. He first challenged for the UFC bantamweight belt at UFC 132 but was by Dominick Cruz via unanimous decision. Faber challenged Barao two fights later for the interim belt after Cruz was forced to yield the title due to injury, but once again, Faber lost via unanimous decision.
The California Kid got his second shot at Barao after winning four consecutive fights in 2013, three of which he won via submission.
Win Streak Snapped
Meanwhile, Rivera is looking to get back in the winning column after his six fight winning streak was halted by Takeya Mizugaki at UFC 173 last May. The loss was Rivera’s first since 2011 and was his first in five UFC bouts. Prior to the loss to Mizugaki, Rivera had back to back second round knockout wins over Edwin Figueroa and George Roop. He also had his UFC 149 victory over Roland Delorme overruled as a no-contest after he tested positive for the banned substance ephedra.
UFC 181 is a pay per view event which will be headlined by the UFC welterweight title bout and rematch between champion Johny Hendricks and challenger Robbie Lawler. A second title fight between lightweight king Anthony Pettis and Gilbert Melendez will serve as the co-main event. But with a top ranked bantamweight like #3 Urijah Faber fighting in the prelims and adding premium to an already stacked fight card, UFC 181 has become one of the most anticipated events to close out 2014.
