US Masters Tournament Preview
The first golf major of the year is upon us, with the US Masters starting tomorrow at Augusta National Golf Club. As usual there are plenty players in with a good chance of winning, and it is going to be just as difficult as ever to pick a winner. There is no Tiger Woods and there are a few concerns regarding the form and fitness of a number of top players.
It is probably easier to find reasons not to back players this year than it is to find reasons to put your money down. There are still a few players worth looking at though and, as always, you’ll want to be spreading your money across multiple selections.
In the first instance I would avoid backing two of the favorites; Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy. Although Mickelson has being showing some positive signs, particularly in the recent warm-up event, there are too many question marks over his recent injury. It is never easy to write off Lefty but I just don’t think this will be his year.
It is hard to ignore the fact that McIlroy has not finished in the top ten at Augusta in the last five years. A strong finish at the Shell Houston Open last weekend could be taken as a good sign but conditions suited him there and he still appears to be struggling with his scoring irons. I wouldn’t go as far as saying he has no chance, but there is better value in the field.
My two top picks would be Jason Day and Sergio Garcia. Day has come close before, with a 2nd and 3rd in his last two Masters finishes. His course management skills are up there with the best and they will help him at Augusta. I think he’ll have a real go at landing his first major.
Garcia is in with a great chance too. His game is looking good and his course form is decent enough. I’d like to think Garcia will win a major at some point during his career and this could be one of his best chances in my opinion.
Other selections worth considering based on value are Matt Kuchar, Dustin Johnson, Lee Westwood and Hunter Mahan.
