Tuesday is another fun day for sports bettors. We start the day with the beginning of UEFA Champions League play, with the afternoon filled with intriguing matchups. Then tonight, we get Game 1 of the World Series between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
BetOnline.ag has a couple of odds boosters posted ahead of Tuesday’s action. Which boost is worth targeting today?
Champions League: Manchester United and Chelsea BOTH to Win (+1100)
The +1100 odds on this boost are the longest we’ve seen on any since we’ve been doing this blog. Manchester United and Chelsea have both gotten off to fairly ragged starts in Premier League play this season, but both will be looking to begin their respective European campaigns on the right foot.
Both sides face incredibly rough matchups, of course. The Red Devils will be in France to take on Paris St. Germain, who made it all the way to last season’s Champions League Final. Chelsea, meanwhile, will welcome Sevilla to Stamford Bridge. Sevilla are only 10th in La Liga through four games, but this side has won the Europa League six times since 2005. That includes a win in last season’s final over Inter Milan.
PSG vs. Manchester United Chelsea vs. Sevilla Ajax vs. Liverpool Bayern vs. Atletico Madrid Barcelona vs. Real Madrid Manchester United vs. Chelsea Dortmund vs. Schalke
PSG haven’t been in perfect form, either. The French giants are 5-0-2 through seven games in Ligue 1, with back-to-back losses to Rens and Marseille back in mid-September. Paris have reeled off four straight wins since then, however, so perhaps they have ironed out their troubles.
Chelsea jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Southampton in the Premier League over the weekend, only to allow the Saints to score three straight goals to end the game with a share of the spoils. The Blues are eighth in the Premier League with a middling 2-2-1 record.
United are one-goal underdogs at the Parc de Princes today, with +500 moneyline odds of grabbing all three points with a win. Chelsea are -115 moneyline favorites to beat Sevilla in their fixture.
MLB: Rays to Win World Series (+200)
The Rays have come this far, but they’re clear-cut underdogs in this series. They’ll be facing the mighty Dodgers, who finished the season with baseball’s best record (43-17). Both teams looked vulnerable in the last round before ultimately advancing in seven games.
Online sportsbooks offering odds on the World Series have installed the Dodgers as fairly heavy favorites. BetOnline currently has the Dodgers as -210 favorites to win their first World Series since 1988, while the Rays are at +180 to win the title for the first time ever.
The Rays have gotten here thanks in large part to pitching and defense. Kevin Cash has a trio of aces atop his rotation between Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell, and Charlie Morton. Tampa Bay is also armed with a stable of bullpen hands that all seem to throw 100 miles-per-hour, and they made just about every possible defensive play they had to make in the last round against the Astros.
71 percent of Earth’s surface is covered by water. The rest is covered by the Rays’ defense.
The Dodgers have great pitching of their own, though their playoff rotation doesn’t have much depth beyond Walker Buehler and Clayton Kershaw. Dave Roberts will have to rely on some combination of Tony Gonsolin, Dustin May, and Julio Urias to get LA through the non-Buehler/Kershaw games, which is certainly a dicey proposition.
The Dodgers have been favored in every single playoff game they have played so far this postseason. That doesn’t change tonight, as Los Angeles has been installed as a -170 moneyline favorite. Kershaw will take the mound for the Dodgers opposite Glasnow for the Rays.
What’s The Best Bet?
Anything can happen. This is 2020, after all. It just feels like this is the Dodgers’ year, though. This will be Los Angeles’ third trip to the World Series in the last four years. They have repeatedly come up short in their seemingly never-ending quest to win another title, but this is the best chance they will have had.
The Rays can be a daunting foe thanks to all of that pitching, but their offense leaves plenty to be desired. If the Dodgers can somehow find a way to keep the red-hot Randy Arozarena in check, it’s tough to see how Tampa Bay can keep up with Los Angeles offensively. The Dodgers led Major League Baseball in homers (118), runs (349), wRC+ (122), and slugging percentage (.483). Tampa Bay to win the series at +200 is interesting, but I’d be shocked if the Dodgers let this opportunity slip away.
We’re also getting awesome value on Manchester United and Chelsea both to win today at +1100.
Chelsea are fully capable of getting past a middling Sevilla side, so it really comes down to whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side can keep up with the mighty PSG. United have been a different side since Bruno Fernandes arrived last winter, and there is more than enough talent here to get the job done.
The Red Devils haven’t been consistent at all under Solskjaer, but I keep coming back to the upside in these odds. I certainly wouldn’t be going all-in on both Manchester United and Chelsea to win today, but a low-dollar flier has all sorts of profit potential here at +1100. Why not shoot for the moon?
