Betway Sportsbook Odds for the 2019 BBC Sports Personality of the Year
As I mentioned before, this annual award show won’t take place for many months. Let’s look at a few of the current favorites.
Anthony Joshua: 8.00
Boxing’s heavyweight kingpin hails from London, England. Anthony Joshua won gold at the 2012 Olympic Games and has since gone 22-0 as a professional. Joshua is the current WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight champion.
The UK has one of the world’s biggest boxing fan bases for years. Anthony Joshua has quickly emerged as one of the country’s biggest sporting celebrities. He’s well-spoken, ambitious, and has revitalized the UK boxing scene. Not long ago, he sold out Wembley Arena when taking on the former heavyweight champ, Wladimir Klitschko.
Despite many of his opponents attempting to rile him up, Anthony Joshua has kept a very level head in the public eye. He’s avoided any real controversy during his career and even launched his own charity back in 2018. Simply put, the UK loves Anthony Joshua, and he’s understandably at the top of the odds for the 2019 BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
I can definitely see Joshua winning this year. Of course, part of this may depend on his performances over the next 10 months. Joshua will be taking on Jarrell Miller in June and will likely fight again by the end of the year. The world loves winners, and if Joshua happens to lose, his odds will likely plummet.
Anthony has also been criticized for taking easy fights. Perhaps he’ll finally sign to take on either Deontay Wilder or Tyson Fury later this year.
Anthony Joshua’s odds are currently set at 8.00. He’s become a household name in the UK and is a solid role model for people around the country.
Dina Asher-Smith: 11.00
At just 23 years of age, Dina Asher-Smith is already established as one of the most accomplished sprinters in the world. She’s won the 2016 and 2018 European Championships and won bronze at the 2016 Olympic Games. Back in December, Smith was awarded the BT Sport Action Woman of the Year award.
There are millions of people who idolize Dina Asher-Smith. She’s a prime example of how hard work and perseverance can pay off. She’s acknowledged her newfound fame in a recent interview.
“There has been so much interest since the European Championships, which is very humbling, especially from people who wouldn’t typically engage with the sport,” she told reporters.
It’s not surprising to see Dina Asher-Smith near the top of the odds for the 2019 BBC Sports Personality of the Year. She’s not in the spotlight quite as much as some of the other athletes on this list, instead choosing to focus on the upcoming World Championships and Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Betway currently lists Dina Asher-Smith’s odds to win this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the year at 11.00. I think she might be worth a bet on. As the year goes on, her odds may get even higher.
Tyson Fury: 11.00
How can you not love Tyson Fury right now? The 6’9” heavyweight boxer had one of the most miraculous comebacks in boxing history last year. After ballooning to nearly 400 pounds and suffering from a host of mental health issues, he came within inches of regaining the heavyweight championship of the world.
Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder fought in one of the best matches in heavyweight boxing history. Wilder appeared to be winning the majority of the contest. In the 12th round, Wilder was dropped by a massive punch. Miraculously, Fury beat the count and continued to fight for the rest of the match. Getting up from that punch was the perfect symbolism for Fury’s comeback into the boxing world.
Fury has been extremely vocal about mental health awareness. “For all the people out there with mental health issues, I did it for you guys,” he said during a post-fight press conference.
After the historic fight with Wilder, Tyson Fury donated his entire $9 million fight purse to fight homelessness in the UK.
Overall, he seems like a good guy, and the UK has taken to him more than ever before. We might even see him take on the aforementioned Anthony Joshua by the end of the year.
Fury sits near the top of the odds for the 2019 BBC Sports Personality of the Year at 11.00. Even if he never fights again, his place in boxing and UK sporting history has been solidified.
Potential Dark Horses to Win the 2019 BBC Sports Personality of the Year
Andy Murray: 15.00
Andy Murray is probably Scotland’s most famous sports star in history. He’s widely considered to be one of the best tennis players of all time with three Grand Slam Single wins to his name. Everyone loves Andy Murray, and it’s not a stretch to imagine him winning the Sports Personality Award this year.
In my opinion, it would be a little underwhelming to see him win. Murray has been awarded this prestigious title three times already, most recently in 2016.
He’s been forced to deal with a hip injury for many years, yet doctor’s claim he can still return to top-level competition.
If Andy Murray retires this year, he may move up the odds for the 2019 BBC Sports Personality of the Year. The UK just likes him, and he’s been a great representative of UK sports for many years. Betway Sportsbook currently lists his odds to win at 15.00
Ben Stokes: 21.00
For UK cricket fans, no one deserves this award more than Ben Stokes. The Vice-Captain of England’s test team has been at the highest level of cricket competition for many years.
Stokes and a few others were charged with affray back in January of 2018. By August, all charges were dropped. Despite his innocence plea, it was a tough blow to his public image.
I still think Ben Stokes has a chance to win. He’s a very popular sportsman in the UK and has earned the status as one of the best cricket players in recent UK history. At the moment, he’s still a solid underdog in terms of odds for the 2019 BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards at 21.00.
