It feels like we have had to wait forever, but Game of Thrones’ eighth and final season is finally upon us. The acclaimed HBO series will be back when the new season debuts on Sunday, April 14. Get excited.
The return of Game of Thrones also means we will finally be able to cash those GoT prop bets. A number of top betting sites have had odds posted regarding what will go down in season 8 for months now. Considering the show has advanced more quickly than the accompanying books by George R.R. Martin, we have no idea which characters will be the next to die, for example. The show is paving its own path.
So, you’d better get those bets in while you can, because the season 8 premiere will be here before you know it. MyBookie is a great site to bet on Game of Thrones. In fact, GoT even has its own section under MyBookie’s “Entertainment” banner.
They’re not messing around. One of the most popular bets when it comes to Game of Thrones surrounds which character will be the first to meet their demise in the new season. I can’t be the only one that initially thought the main character of the series would be Ned Stark. Needless to say, I did not expect Ned Stark to be (spoiler alert!) killed off in the ninth episode of season 1.
Ned’s death set the precedent, as more characters have been killed off of Game of Thrones than I can count. So, just because someone seems well established does not necessarily make them a safe bet to make it through the entire upcoming season unscathed. Below are some of the betting favorites to be the first character to die in season 8.
Euron Greyjoy +150
Yara Greyjoy +200
Theon Greyjoy +400
Clearly, those that create the odds for one of the world’s premier betting sites does not think much of the Greyjoy family’s chances at survival. Yara and her uncle Euron have the “best” odds to die first at +200 apiece, while Theon, who feels like a character that should’ve died long ago, isn’t far behind at +400.
Considering it’s been nearly 2 years since the last season of Game of Thrones ended, I’ll try to catch you up a bit in case you’ve forgotten a few things. Euron, who recently showed up in King’s Landing and teamed up with Cersei Lannister, wound up capturing his niece, Yara, while Theon managed to escape.
Theon plans to save his sister, but he’s been one of the weaker characters in the show for the duration. He has almost become a sympathetic figure at this point, but it would not be all that shocking to see Yara get killed before Theon is able to save her. Euron killed his own brother, Baelon, earlier in the series, so we know he has no issue with taking down his family members.
Betting sites initially had Euron’s odds of being the first to die around +800, so the fact that he has seen his odds shift so much that he’s now the odds-on favorite could be a sign that his death is imminent. I still think the most likely outcome is Theon successfully rescuing Yara here, so Euron being the first to go in season 8 makes some sense at +150.
None of these Game of Thrones betting options are particularly safe, simply because we are just making educated guesses regarding what will happen. As a result, I wouldn’t be betting the house on any of these props. If you want a decent bet that comes with a hint of profit potential, betting Euron to be the first to die in season 8 at +150 is a fine option.
Tormund Giantsbane +200
The Mountain +700
Beric Dondarrion +1000
The Hound +1200
Jorah Mormont +1400
Brienne of Tarth +1400
Davos Seaworth +1600
Let’s just say that things could be looking better for Tormund Giantsbane. When we last saw Tormund, he was trying to protect the Wall when the Night King and his undead dragon, Viserion, was demolishing it. The last episode of season 7 ended with the Wall’s destruction in progress, so time will tell whether Tormund and some of the others in the area managed to survive.
However, we do see Tormund and his glorious red beard walking around in the preview trailer for season 8, so it seems like we can assume he survives the dragon attack. Tormund’s odds are surely as high as they are because of the predicament in which we saw him last, but I’m not overly bullish on his chances of being the first to go. Had we not seen him in the aforementioned season 8 trailer, perhaps that would be a different story. I think you should pass on betting on Tormund here at +200.
The Mountain (+700) and the Hound (+1200) seem likely to face off at some point. The brothers have all sorts of animosity for one another, and we’ve seen them fight in the past. The Mountain seems to have a clear edge in terms of sheer size and strength, but the Hound seems to be the more vengeful of the 2. Let’s not forget that the Mountain has already died and been resurrected once before.
Something tells me the Hound will get the better of the Mountain whenever the much-hyped Clegane Bowl does come to pass. Getting the Mountain at +700 makes for an interesting bet, but the much-hyped bout feels like something that could happen later in the season. I don’t hate the Mountain at +700, but I think there are better options.
Beric Dondarrion is last seen trying to escape Viserion’s destruction of the Wall with Tormund, This is a guy that has already been killed 6 times before, so death isn’t exactly new to him. Like The Mountain and Jon Snow, he has been revitalized. Jorah Mormont has been cured of his greyscale, while Bronn is expected to join the fight against the White Walkers.
There is obvious potential for several characters to die in the same episode, especially once the full-on battle against the undead begins. I’d be surprised if either Bronn or Jorah made it out of season 8 alive, so they’re 2 of my favorite bets on the board at +1400 apiece. I slightly prefer Bronn, though Brienne of Tarth is another interesting candidate at +1400 herself.
Brienne swore an oath to protect the Stark children, which is something she has taken very seriously throughout the entire series. Brienne has been a fearless warrior, and she will undoubtedly be willing to sacrifice herself for the greater good if necessary. She’s also one of the more likable characters on the show, which only seems to enhance her chances of dying too soon.
There are plenty of viable Game of Thrones death bets among these fringe characters, but, unfortunately, Brienne of Tarth looks like the best bet of the bunch at +1400.
Starks and Lannisters
Cersei Lannister +650
Sansa Stark +1000
Jamie Lannister +1200
Arya Stark +2800
Tyrion Lannister +4000
Bran Stark +5000
The Lannisters have gone in starkly different directions as the series has progressed. Cersei has gradually descended further into darkness, while Tyrion and Jamie have become good guys. Cersei is among the betting favorites to be put to the sword first in season 8 at +650.
It’s hard to fathom Cersei surviving the series. She has been one of the primary contenders to sit on the Iron Throne at the very end, but there has been so much buildup that any outcome other than a satisfying demise for Cersei would be something of a letdown. She has been one of the least likable characters from the jump.
Considering Daenerys Targaryen and Arya Stark both have it out for Cersei, I think she goes down at some point. Whether she’s the first character to die in season 8 is tough to say, however. Cersei makes for a passable betting value here at +650, but it isn’t the most likely outcome.
Sansa has surprisingly high odds of being the first Game of Thrones character to die in season 8 at +1000, which makes her easily the most likely candidate of the Stark kids with Arya at +2800 and Bran way down at +5000.
Sansa has had a few brushes with death in the past, and betting on her to finally meet her end at +1000 comes with obvious upside if it does come to pass. Arya and Bran make for pretty easy bets to pass, though their odds are tempting from a profit standpoint. I just can’t imagine either actually being the first to pass away. Ditto for Jamie (+1200) and Tyrion (+4000).
Cersei is a bet I would definitely take at +650. Throwing down even a measly $100 on the Lannister sister would pay out $650, which would definitely be worth your while.
The Night King +2000
Daenerys Targaryen +3300
Jon Snow +6600
The Night King is currently in the process of captaining zombie Viserion as the dragon demolishes the wall. White Walkers have been killed, as proven by Samwell Tarly of all people, but the Night King being the first to die in season 8 of Game of Thrones would be quite the curveball. The show is known for keeping us on our toes, but killing this guy off right away would take plenty of the drama out of the rest of the season.
If I were betting on the Night King on the Game of Thrones character to die first this season, I would want better odds than +2000.
Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow are among the heavy favorites to finish season 8 sitting on the Iron Throne, so it would obviously be rather surprising if either met their end early on. Daenerys, also known as Khaleesi, may well die at some point. One of her dragons has been seized by the White Walkers, and her control over the other 2 dragons has been tenuous at times.
Jon Snow has already died once. This was pretty controversial at the time, and some believe his resurrection came as a result of massive fan backlash. We can’t know for sure, of course, but Snow has been the easiest character to root for since the beginning. I would much rather bet on Jon Snow finishing the series as the ruler of Westeros than I would on him dying early, so I’ll say “no thanks” to Snow dying first at +6600.
None of these 3 look like viable bets. I’d stick with the options with less profitable odds.
Given the sheer number of characters in Game of Thrones, it’s reasonable to suggest that the first to die in season 8 will likely be someone that isn’t necessarily a primary player. Dany Targaryen, Jon Snow and Bran Stark probably won’t be perishing early on, if at all.
As mentioned previously, Euron Greyjoy feels like a smart bet at +150. Even if the odds aren’t the most profitable on the board, the likely sequence of events doesn’t really favor him. We know Theon is going to come try to rescue Yara, and one would imagine Euron will have to die in order for Yara to be saved.
Theon makes for a fine option himself at +400 considering he will presumably be in the line of fire if he’s going to save his sister. Yara at +200 is a perfectly fair bet, as well. I don’t think you are doing it wrong if you decide to bet on one of the Greyjoys to be the first Game of Thrones character to bite the dust this season.
Other bets worth considering are Brienne (+1400), the Mountain (+700) and Bronn (+1400). We have no way of knowing what season 8 of Game of Thrones has in store, but we can be assured that plenty of the show’s beloved characters may wind up kicking the bucket.
Betting on Game of Thrones is a fun way to enhance your viewing experience, so why not head on over to MyBookie and place some bets while you still can?
My favorite bets on which Game of Thrones mainstay will be the first to die in season 8 are as follows:
Euron Greyjoy +150
Theon Greyjoy +400
Yara Greyjoy +200
Brienne of Tarth +1400
Cersei Lannister +650
