Bruins Have the Players, Resiliency to Pull Off Perceived Upset

Johnny Juzang (12/1 to win 2021-22 Naismith Player of the Year), Jaime Jacquez and UCLA had won their first four games by gaudy margins of 37 (95-58, CSB), 9 (86-77, VIL, OT), 21 (100-79, LBSU) and 35 (98-63, UNF), an average of +25.6 ppg.

Up in Spokane, Washington, Drew Timme (5/1 to win Naismith Player of the Year) and Gonzaga won its first four by 24, 12, 27 and 42, for an average winning margin of +26.25 ppg, so both of these teams were obviously scoring when they wanted.

And we can expect a certain back-and-forth pace here in this collision here in the Mojave Desert, which likely won’t drop the losing team too much in the national polls with Gonzaga likely to run the table in the WCC and UCLA very resilient.

UCLA saw its 2020-21 NCAA Championship dreams shattered by Gonzaga in the Final Four in an OT Loss (93-90) at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, so the Bruins should be motivated but UCLA may have trouble with the Zags’ size underneath.

The Bruins have a couple of players Injured heading into this big contest in Forward Cody Riley (Knee, Out Indefinitely) and Forward Mac Etienne (Undisclosed) so UCLA (3/1 to make the 2022 NCAA Final Four) will surely miss their presence here.

Chet Holmgren (12/1 to win Naismith Player of the Year) and Gonzaga (+150 to make the 2022 NCAA Final Four) are relatively healthy with only Guard Dominick Harris nursing an injured Foot for the Bulldogs who also faced Bellarmine.

The Bulldogs are 2-10 SU all time in No. 1 vs.. No. 2 games and Head Coach Mark Few is 2-7 SU in the nine games he has coached for the Zags in that role.

Gonzaga’s Size, Scoring Depth Too Much for UCLA to Overcome?

UCLA plays in a Power Five conference and is 9-1 ATS in its last 10 overall and the Bruins went a profitable 36-28-1 ATS since 2019 (57.6%) and won’t be intimidated in the least by Gonzaga, a team it just played and knows how to scheme against.

Look for the Zags to rely heavily on frontcourt Twin Towers Timme (20.9 ppg, 5.3 rpg. 2.5 apg) and Holmgren (11.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 4.0 apg), but the other Gonzaga starters are dynamite as well and should cause UCLA all sorts of problems.

Gonzaga Guards Julian Stratham (14.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg), Rasir Bolton (10.3 ppg) and Andrew Nembhard (7.5 ppg, 5.5 apg) provide over 30 ppg of Offensive production and more than 10 Rebounds and 8.3 apg in concert with Timme and Holmgren.

This game marks the return of ESPN College Basketball color commentator Dick Vitale who was given the OK from his doctors to return to work doing games between his Chemotherapy treatments.

“I’m on cloud nine right now,” Vitale said.

“I can’t wait. Tuesday night, I will do my first game, and what a game to do! No. 1 Gonzaga versus No. 2 UCLA. There’s nothing that will be better medicine than sitting at courtside, meeting all my buddies down there, having a blast.”

Besides Juzang (21.5 ppg), 2.5 rpg) and Jacquez (18.0, 7.5 rpg), the Bruins also feature talented Guards Jules Bernard (18.0 ppg, 5.3 rpg), Tyger Campbell (13.0 ppg, 4.8 apg) and David Singleton (8.0 ppg), but not having RIley (6-9, 256) hurts.

So the thought here is that the Bulldogs two taller bodies of Naismith candidates Timme and Holmgren underneath will be able to get relatively easy points against the Bruins in the paint underneath as well as ultimately have the Rebounding edge.

And with UCLA playing so many Overs (5-0) and the Bruins Totals going over by so much (+20,5 ppg), backing the Over in this Neutral site affair with so many scorers makes sense with between 175-201 likely being scored in this huge showdown.
