NFL Bet: Will the Arizona Cardinals Lose or Detroit Lions Win First

4 Minute Read

BetOnline has released an interesting NFL futures bet that asks bettors which will happen first: a loss by the Arizona Cardinals or a win by the Detroit Lions.

Currently, the Cardinals are the only undefeated team in the NFL. And, the Detroit Lions are the only winless team in the league.

Let’s huddle up to examine this prop bet and see which option is worth placing a wager on.

NFL Betting Odds

What will happen first:

  • Arizona Cardinals Lose (-165)
  • Detroit Lions Win (+125)

Arizona Cardinals Lose (-165)

The Cardinals are 6-0 on the season and look every bit the part of a contender in the NFC. Currently, they lead the Rams in the NFC West division by one game and that’s due to their 37-20 demolishing of the Rams in Week 4.

Arizona is coming off an impressive 37-14 Week 6 victory over the Browns that showed this team is strong at home and on the road.

Cardinals Team Stats

The Cardinals are led by a top tier offense that’s 6th in the league at 403 total yards per game. They’re 4th in the league in scoring at 32.3ppg, 9th in passing and 6th in rushing.

Arizona’s offense is led by third year QB Kyler Murray who’s currently the frontrunner for the NFL MVP after one third of the season has been completed.

The Cardinals’ defense has also been a strength for this team. Arizona ranks 2nd in points allowed at 18.2ppg and 10th in yards allowed at 342.8ypg. They’re 6th against the pass and have a +8 turnover differential with 13 takeaways. That’s second best in the NFL.

Looking at the Cardinals schedule

The Cardinals have a tough stretch of games coming up in the next five to six weeks. They should blowout the Texans in Week 7, but then they face the Packers, 49ers, Panthers, Seahawks, Bears and Rams over a six game span.

I do not see this team remaining unbeaten over that stretch. The Packers, Panthers, and Rams games are all at home, but they will have to travel to San Francisco, Seattle, and Chicago.

Arizona has already beat the 49ers and the Rams. However, both divisional rivals are looking for revenge. The 49ers played Arizona tough and lost the game late in the 4th quarter.

This stretch of games will prove where Arizona measures up to the rest of the NFC.

Detroit Lions Win (+125)

The Detroit Lions remain the league’s only winless team after the Jaguars won in Week 6, which snapped a 20 game losing streak. The other bad teams are the Jets and Texans, but they have also picked up one victory each on the season.

Detroit has lost to the 49ers, Packers, Ravens, Bears, Vikings and Bengals. Half of the losses were by one score and the other half were blowouts.

The Lions also lost by two points to the Ravens and two points to the Vikings. It took an NFL record breaking field goal as time expired for Baltimore to win that Week 3 matchup and steal the victory from Detroit.

So, the Lions aren’t a complete dumpster fire, but they do have a lot of deficiencies on both sides of the ball that make it a tough task to win games.

Lions Team Stats

The Detroit offense has been bad this year as they rank 27th in total yards 321ypg, 28th in points at 18.2ppg, and 25th in passing at 229 yards per game.

Defensively, the Lions rank 25th in yards allowed at 384.5ypg, 26th against the run at 132.2ypg, and 25th in scoring at 28.7ppg. On three occasions, Detroit has given up 34 or more points in a game.

This team plays hard for coach Campbell, but they lack talent on both sides of the ball. That’s what happens when a franchise is going through a rebuild.

Looking Ahead at Detroit’s Schedule

Detroit has the 4th toughest remaining schedule in the league. Yet, since we examined the Cardinals next six games, let’s start by taking a look at Detroit’s next six contests. They will play at the Rams this week, Eagles, at Pittsburgh, at Cleveland, Chicago, and Minnesota.

I definitely don’t see a win in the next four games, but Detroit could end up stealing one against divisional foes the Bears or Vikings. The Lions have already played both teams and lost by a combined 12 points.

If they can’t defeat Chicago or Minnesota, there only other shot at a victory would be Week 16 against the Atlanta Falcons.

What Happens First?

This NFL prop bet is harder than it looks. Both teams have a tough stretch of games over the next six weeks or so. Yet, there is a better chance of the Cardinals losing first than Detroit winning.

Arizona plays the Packers and 49ers in Weeks 8 and 9. The game against Green Bay is on a Thursday night, which means a short week to rest and prepare for one of the top teams in the NFC.

I don’t see the Cardinals making it past Green Bay and San Francisco without losing. Whereas, the only possible chance that Detroit has at winning isn’t until they play the Bears and Vikings over a month from now.

For this prop bet, take the Cardinals to lose first at top online sportsbook as I believe they will most likely drop their first game this season to the Packers on Thursday Night Football in Week 8.
