Sometimes betting on sports gets a little bit old. Sure, there are thousands of amazing sports betting options available every day through most online sportsbooks, but every once in a while, it’s fun to bet on something weird. With that in mind, I’ll now be breaking down the top three strangest bets available in 2019.
These bets come from a couple of the best online betting sites in the US. Each of these websites is well-known for offering fantastic odds and safe payment options for its members.
Are you ready to see what you can actually bet on this year?
In today’s age, the “Space Race” isn’t between two global superpowers. Instead, some of the world’s most powerful companies are competing for their stake in the space travel industry. If that doesn’t make you think we’re living in the future, I don’t know what will.
A number of companies have stated their intention to bring humans to Mars. None have made tremendous progress up to this point. Let’s take a look at the odds for one of the strangest bets available in 2019 below.
Elon Musk’s Space X company is the current betting favorite as the first to bring humans to Mars. This company was founded in 2002 and has been one of the world’s leaders in the private space travel industry. In 2011, they began working on reusable rocket technology in order to massively cut down costs. By 2017, they’d successfully landed a rocket from space.
Elon Musk seems determined to get humans to Mars. He’s already laid out plans for colonization of the planet and recently stated that tickets to the planet would cost around $500,000.
Space X has accomplished more than any other private space transportation company. It may be years down the line, but they seem destined to accomplish their goal of bringing humans to Mars at some point. At the moment, Bovada Sportsbook lists their odds of being the first to charter humans to Mars at -350.
Blue Origin may not be in the headlines as much as Space X, yet they’ve been working hard to develop their space transportation technology since founding in 2000. Jeff Bezos, the world’s richest man, owns this company and is surely working to be the first to bring humans to Mars.
Earlier this month, Bezos explained his vision for reusable rockets and the future of space travel. He states that Blue Origin will have a human launch by the end of 2019. Whether or not that’s true remains to be seen.
This company has acted as a manufacturing company for some years. Their mission has always been manned space travel, though. Bovada currently lists Blue Origin’s odds to be the first company to bring humans to Mars at +400. They’re understandably a betting favorite to win one of the strangest bets available in 2019.
Boeing has been a part of just about every major space endeavor from the Mercury rockets to the International Space Station. This company has worked with NASA over the years, yet they haven’t ventured into the space tourism industry. That could certainly change in the future.
Boeing’s experience in space travel could make them the favorite here. In 2017, CEO Dennis Muilenburg told media that Boeing would be the first company to reach the red planet.
“Eventually we’re going to go to Mars, and I firmly believe the first person that sets foot on Mars will get there on a Boeing rocket,” he said.
There haven’t been any major updates on Boeing’s progress to get to Mars. They claim to be working with NASA on a 38-story tall rocket for the mission. Test flights on the rocket are expected by the end of this year. Boeing’s odds are currently set at +600.
Space Force is still only a proposed branch of the US Armed Forces. Change-ups in the Pentagon have slowed the progress of this branch being established. It seems unlikely, but Space Force has the potential for being the first agency to bring humans to Mars.
President Trump commented on Space Force last month.
“We will recognize that space is a new war-fighting domain with the Space Force leading the way,” he told media.
This branch seems much more like a defensive agency and hasn’t mentioned any specific plans to go to Mars.
Anything is possible. Perhaps officials in the government will decide that we need a military base on Mars. Space Force is understandably the major underdog for one of the strangest bets available in 2019 at just +1400. A wager on if Space Force will reach Mars at all could be included on a list of the strangest bets available in 2019.
I had to include this one into a list of the strangest bets available in 2019 as well. It’s fun to try predicting which company will eventually bring humans to Mars, yet this one poses the question of if humans will set foot on the red planet in the next six years. The odds are now set, though you’ll have to wait a while before you see any winnings.
Six years is definitely ambitious, yet the odds here that humans will set foot on Mars by 2025 aren’t that low. That’s interesting, considering experts have recently claimed it’s impossible. The trip there would take six to eight months, and the time to develop plans for the journey and landing will take years.
Many of the issues in manned space travel lies with the astronauts themselves. They will be exposed to massive amounts of radiation. Food rations will need to be strictly adhered to. Their bodies will need to get used to space for months, or years at a time.
A space mission of this magnitude has never been attempted before. There are still so many questions that remain over its feasibility. Fortunately, you can now bet on whether or not this event will happen.
As I mentioned earlier, there are a number of factors currently keeping a manned mission to Mars from happening. Due to celestial mechanics, a mission to Mars won’t even be possible until 2020. If that window is missed, the next mission won’t be possible until 2022.
The other major question here is if the humans that land on Mars will be able to come home. Elon Musk has stated that a Mars mission would be a one-way trip. That may be a difficult pill to swallow for potential astronauts volunteering for the mission.
Both NASA and private companies have made some impressive advancements in its space program over the years. It’s certainly possible that humans could set foot on Mars by 2025. One of the strangest bets available in 2019 allows you to put money on whether or not it actually happens.
The Golden Raspberry Awards, or Razzies, is an annual mock award ceremony that recognizes the worst film of the year. The 2019 Razzies are scheduled to take place on February 23rd. Mybookie.ag is currently allowing their members to bet on which film wins.
This might not seem like one of the strangest bets available in 2019, but with the Oscars coming up in a few weeks, I felt it had to be included. There are some fantastic odds available, and each movie truly deserves its nomination on this list.
With a 0% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Gotti is the current favorite to win this year’s Razzie award. It tells the story (or at least attempts to) of famous New York mob boss John Gotti. The film’s editing, acting, and storyline was harshly criticized.
At the moment, this movie holds odds of +120 to win the Razzie award.
Holmes & Watson: +260
When Holmes & Watson was first announced to star Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, movie fans were hopeful. As soon as the movie hit the theatres, it became apparent that this was one of the worst movies of the year. Critics have given this film just a 10% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and thousands of viewers are walking out of the theater.
With odds of +260, this is without a doubt one of the favorites to win the Razzies this year. The movie failed on just about every level.
Robin Hood: +600
Robin Hood is another film that looked like it had potential but failed miserably on the big screen. It took a unique and modern spin on the classic Robin Hood story, yet the filmmaking and script left a lot to be desired. At least a few critics felt the film did a few things right.
I don’t think Robin Hood will win the Razzie this year. It had a $100 million budget, and at the very least it was visually appealing to watch. The odds for this movie to win are set at +600.
The Razzies generally include at least one horror movie in their award ceremony. Winchester fills that void this year, and most feel it’s a deserved spot on the list. It wasn’t scary, and some viewers were left feeling Winchester was more of a comedy than a horror film.
This is another one that’s not likely to win the Razzie award. Roger Ebert actually gave the movie three out of four stars. It was definitely a disappointment for hardcore horror fans, but there were worse movies that came out this year. Winchester’s odds to win the Razzies are currently set at +1000.
